Bungie has confirmed that Marathon’s planned Season 3 update is being delayed, while the game’s seasonal structure is being retired altogether. The bigger news is the direction of the next major content release: a permanent player-versus-environment mode featuring enormous alien creatures.

Symbiosis begins Marathon’s next chapter

Named Symbiosis, the update is scheduled to launch on December 8. Bungie describes it as the first major step in the game’s next phase, moving beyond its established player-versus-player-versus-environment extraction format.

The studio says the update will add Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience, giving players a new way to explore the setting, make progress and interact with its world. Bungie also says the game will continue evolving through March and beyond, with future decisions informed by player feedback. The studio’s official announcement explains the planned changes.

Giant alien threats enter the picture

The reveal was accompanied by an image of several Runners firing at a huge, insect-like alien. The creature immediately recalls the giant bugs of Helldivers 2, although Marathon players have already faced smaller insect enemies on Tau Ceti IV, including massive ticks.

Nothing previously shown for the game has suggested an enemy on this scale. Bungie has promised more details soon, but the image makes one thing clear: alien wildlife and larger environmental threats are set to become a much more prominent part of Marathon.

In its September 14 announcement, Bungie said a blog post about the game’s future was planned for later in the month. That update is expected to explain how the studio intends to turn Marathon into a more alien and dynamic survival experience, as well as answer player questions and outline the road to Symbiosis.

A shift towards PvE survival

The community has been divided between players who want Bungie to concentrate on competitive PvP and those hoping for a stronger PvE focus. Expectations for the current season were particularly high after survival-horror elements were teased, but the promised change turned out not to be a big deal for many players.

Some had expected to battle zombie Runner Shells alongside the familiar UESC security droids. Instead, the season offered something substantially different from that expectation.

Symbiosis gives Bungie a chance to make AI-controlled enemies and environmental dangers central to the experience. With Destiny 2 now sunset, the new direction could also help Marathon occupy a different space within Bungie’s catalogue.

Whether the game eventually introduces the Pfhor remains unknown, and the change may arrive too late for some players. Still, Symbiosis represents a substantial attempt to broaden the extraction shooter’s identity.

For players who enjoy seeing how shooters evolve, the announcement is another noteworthy piece of arcade and gaming news. Those interested in the hardware side of the genre can also explore RETROCADE’s arcade machines, arcade light guns and arcade machine buying guide.
