Several established ASMR creators have had their YouTube channels terminated without prior warnings or the usual sequence of strikes. Slight Sounds, RoseASMR and Its_Bunnii were among the creators told that their accounts breached the platform’s sexual-content rules.
The removals have prompted questions about how YouTube distinguishes intimate, suggestive and explicitly sexual material. Creators also argue that the sudden action creates an uneven standard, particularly when years of work can disappear without notice.
Creators lose years of work
Slight Sounds said the channel had supported her livelihood and career for eight or nine years. Along with losing future income, she said she could no longer access an archive containing videos that mattered to both her and her audience.
Other creators have described the decisions as confusing and disproportionate. Its_Bunnii questioned whether videos such as “Eyes Closed ASMR”, “Gentle Haircut and Styling” and a slow, breathy storybook reading should be treated as sexual content. The “Eyes Closed ASMR” video had reportedly reached about two million views before the channel was removed.
“ASMR isn’t an inherently sexual category,” Slight Sounds wrote while describing the removal of her channel and other female creators’ accounts. She also said the issue had existed since she began making ASMR videos in 2013. The post can be viewed through July 28, 2026.
What ASMR videos contain
Autonomous sensory meridian response, usually shortened to ASMR, describes a relaxing physical response that some people experience from sounds including tapping, scratching and quiet speech. The causes remain uncertain, although the sensation is sometimes compared with better-documented neurological experiences such as synaesthesia.
The term reached a much wider audience through an episode of This American Life, helping fuel a large YouTube community built around calming soundscapes.
ASMR channels can feature softly spoken vlogs, collections of prop-based sounds and elaborate roleplay scenarios. These performances range from imagined space holidays to demonstrations involving power tools. The format can feel intimate because it is designed to create a close, immersive listening experience, but intimacy is not automatically the same as erotic content.
That distinction has long been difficult to maintain. Suggestive roleplays are common, and some creators also operate subscription pages elsewhere that offer more adult material. YouTube prohibits directly linking to or promoting sexual content, while some channels have historically kept those links out of prominent positions.
Questions about inconsistent enforcement
Critics of the terminations say the affected channels were often comparatively restrained, especially beside the suggestive material that remains available across major video platforms. Women who make ASMR content also face persistent sexualisation, unwanted attention and scrutiny from viewers.
Its_Bunnii shared examples of the material YouTube appeared to classify as sexual, while noting that the channel descriptions and “about me” information had not changed. The accompanying post is available through @YouTubeCreators.
The removals have left creators distressed, angry and uncertain about what they can safely publish. YouTube has reportedly indicated that it does not plan to reverse the decisions, leaving affected performers without their channels or complete access to their archives.
A broader platform-moderation debate
The ASMR dispute arrives amid wider concern about the removal of queer and erotic material from online services. Payment processors and platforms including Patreon, Steam and Itch.io have faced criticism over restrictions affecting adult or sexually themed work, while comparable material from large commercial entertainment companies often appears less affected.
