After almost two decades at the centre of Magic: The Gathering’s story, Jace Beleren’s journey has ended. His successor, Tam, is not a straightforward replacement: she is a new person created from Jace’s identity, carrying his Planeswalker spark but free to define his legacy for herself.
Jace’s attempt to remake the Multiverse
Jace became one of the game’s most recognisable heroes as a powerful mind mage and member of the Gatewatch. He fought threats across the Multiverse alongside figures such as Chandra Nalaar and Liliana Vess.
That heroic image changes during the events surrounding Reality Fracture. In the sixth short story from Tarkir: Dragonstorm, Jace discovers that the Meditation Realm is a malleable foundation beneath all reality. With the magical power of Ugin’s Spirit Gem, he attempts to rewrite history and remove disasters such as the Eldrazi threat, Nicol Bolas’s actions and Vraska’s transformation into a Phyrexian.
The spell destroys Jace’s physical form and causes his mind to fracture. One surviving fragment, the Theorist, takes control, removes other aspects of Jace’s personality and creates an alternate reality called the Echoverse.
The Theorist plans to replace the original Multiverse with this constructed reality, erasing events including the War of the Spark and the Invasion of New Phyrexia. He also establishes Hexhaven, a sinister counterpart to Strixhaven populated by alternate versions of characters such as Liliana.
Tam’s hidden connection to Jace
Tam was created from Jace’s essence as a contingency for his eventual death. She first appeared in the Lorwyn Eclipsed storyline as a gifted but reserved first-year student at Strixhaven. As a member of Quandrix College, she could manipulate probability and use reality-warping magic to solve problems quickly.
Her reliance on logic rather than compassion caused friction with her friends. The explanation was darker than it first appeared: Tam was partly derived from Jace and had spent much of her life being trained by the Theorist.
Her allegiance became clear in episode 6 of Secrets of Strixhaven. Tam pushed Oracle Jadzi through a magical portal, abandoned her classmates and then reunited with the Theorist. She said she had been made to carry out that mission, while also admitting that her time with her friends had been the happiest period of her life.
Tam chooses to oppose the Theorist
In Reality Fracture, the Theorist wants Jadzi dead because every oracle’s soul is connected to creation. He believes that killing her will provide the knowledge needed to overwrite the Multiverse.
Liliana explains in episode 2 that replacing the original reality would smother the souls of its inhabitants. The Echoverse’s copies, she says, do not possess complete spirits. Tam begins to wonder whether the people of Hexhaven and the wider Echoverse can experience genuine friendship at all.
Her doubts culminate in a confrontation with the Theorist. Tam was designed to help him succeed, but deciding to stop him becomes the first major choice she makes entirely for herself.
Tam’s change of heart does not erase her earlier betrayal. When the two realities begin to collide, she reunites with her former classmate Kirol and accepts that she failed the trust placed in her. Kirol does not immediately forgive her, yet Tam continues trying to repair the damage without waiting for reassurance.
Meanwhile, Vraska, Chandra, Ajani and Garruk recover fragments of Jace’s mind from prisons created by the Theorist. Vraska stabs the Theorist, allowing the scattered pieces to return. The group severs his connection to the spell joining the two realities, briefly restoring Jace’s mind to wholeness.
Jace realises that the spell is tied to his life and dies in Vraska’s arms. The Echoverse, however, remains intertwined with the original Multiverse.
Tam receives Jace’s Planeswalker spark
In the final Reality Fracture story, Jace’s Planeswalker spark leaves his body and enters Tam. The surge gives her enough power to summon Emrakul, the Eldrazi titan, from the moon of Innistrad.
Emrakul agrees to help. She separates the artificial Echoverse from the original Multiverse before consuming it, preventing the false reality from replacing the real one.
This spark was me, and now, it is you.
When Kirol asks Tam who she is, she does not describe herself as Jace, the Theorist or a tool made for a predetermined purpose. She simply identifies herself as Tam. Jace’s final impression calls her his “fail-safe” and asks her to continue his work by making things better.
A successor rather than a resurrection
Jace’s curiosity, diplomacy, survival instincts and willingness to begin again emerge within Tam. The story presents her as a continuation and a clean slate, but she is not Jace returned in another body. A separate Jace consciousness does not remain inside her.
Tam was made from Jace, carries his spark and shares elements of his personality, yet she can decide what those inherited qualities mean. She is powerful enough to reach Emrakul across the Multiverse, save reality and return to Strixhaven without being bound to repeat Jace’s choices.
After Jace’s funeral on Vryn, Tam visits Vraska wearing a blue cloak and displaying mannerisms that remind the gorgon of the man she loved. Vraska sees the resemblance to a ghost, but Tam introduces herself as someone new and promises to help make things better.

Jace Beleren is dead, but his legacy continues through Tam. She is neither an exact copy nor a resurrection, but a new person formed from the remains of an old hero, with the freedom to choose which parts of that inheritance deserve to survive.
