Magic: The Gathering’s Final Fantasy collaboration is continuing beyond its original release, with another promotional card tied to Square Enix’s next major Final Fantasy 7 game.
During Sony’s State of Play presentation, Square Enix showed an extended gameplay trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, described as the concluding chapter of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy. The game is scheduled to launch on 8 April 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X.
Square Enix also detailed its pre-order offering. Participating retailers will have special day-one physical editions containing a foil Magic promo card, available while supplies last. The artwork shows Cloud Strife confronting Sephiroth, giving card-game fans another reason to watch the game’s physical release. A new Final Fantasy version of Final Showdown
The promotional card is a reprint of Final Showdown, a white instant first printed as a mythic rare in 2024’s Outlaws of Thunder Junction.
Its spree mechanic allows the player to combine three available effects: remove all abilities from every creature until the end of the turn, give one creature indestructible, or destroy every creature on the battlefield.
That combination makes the card adaptable in several situations. For two mana, it can protect an important creature by granting indestructible. Six mana can clear the battlefield at instant speed, while eight mana pays for all three effects in sequence: creature abilities are removed, one creature is protected, and the remaining creatures are destroyed.
The design also suits the scale of Final Fantasy 7, where a falling meteor threatens the entire planet.
The original card depicts a lone gunslinger walking past bodies, while this version replaces that scene with new artwork by Square Enix character designer Tetsuya Nomura. Cloud and Sephiroth face one another in the illustration.
There is a small story detail worth noting: based on the established Final Fantasy 7 canon, it cannot necessarily be their actual final confrontation because Sephiroth is still wearing his shirt. The remake’s willingness to disrupt the series’ established fate, however, leaves room for uncertainty.
More Magic promos are following Final Fantasy releases
This is not Square Enix’s first use of a Magic card as a video-game pre-order incentive. Physical Nintendo Switch 2 copies of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, released in June, included a full-art foil Zack Fair promo featuring artwork by Nomura.
Additional Final Fantasy products also arrived after the original June 2025 launch. In December 2025, Wizards of the Coast released four Scene Boxes recreating moments from Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy 8, Final Fantasy 9 and Final Fantasy 15. The same holiday release period brought a Chocobo Bundle containing themed lands and alternate-art cards.
These releases follow a wider trend in crossover collecting, where special cards, boxed displays and game-linked bonuses extend a franchise collaboration well beyond its initial set. Could Magic return to Final Fantasy?
When discussing the original project at MagicCon: Las Vegas in May, principal designer Gavin Verhey acknowledged that even a very large set could not represent the franchise’s entire history. The team had to prioritise major characters and memorable events while still including less obvious references.
Verhey also indicated that the designers treated the set as though it might be their only chance to adapt Final Fantasy. Even with that approach, he said there was considerable enthusiasm for revisiting the property if the opportunity arose, particularly because the first set did not cover the franchise’s side games.
A second full Final Fantasy set has not been confirmed. However, the Scene Boxes, Chocobo Bundle, Zack Fair promo and upcoming Cloud-versus-Sephiroth card suggest that supporting releases have become an important part of the collaboration. With Final Fantasy 7 Revelation still ahead of its April 2027 launch, another surprise remains possible.
