Marvel’s Wolverine arrives on PS5 tonight after a notably uneven early reception. Reviews have been middling, while several meme-friendly clips have spread widely online. Whatever the wider debate around Sony, the game does offer one especially strong idea: Liam McIntyre makes a convincing Wolverine, and Marvel should consider him for the next live-action X-Men era.

Hugh Jackman has defined Logan since the character’s debut in the 2000 film X-Men. For roughly 25 years, he has remained the franchise’s most recognisable constant, even through a prequel reboot that recast several roles. Although Logan appeared to close the book on his portrayal in 2017, Jackman returned for 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine. He also appears to be campaigning for a role in Avengers: Doomsday, though it remains unclear whether that is simply a joke or a genuine hint about the crossover film expected in December.

Marvel is nevertheless moving towards a new generation of live-action X-Men films. The announced cast includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, following her debut in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, alongside Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Naverrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, Christopher Abbott as Professor X and Adam Driver as Mr Sinister. So far, no actor has been announced as Logan.

Why Liam McIntyre deserves consideration

Replacing Jackman would invite immediate comparisons, but McIntyre has already demonstrated that he can take the character in a different direction. In the game, Logan remains damaged, irritable and dangerous, yet he is also noticeably warmer. McIntyre’s gentler presence helps separate this performance from the version audiences have watched for decades.

The character model does not always present McIntyre’s likeness consistently, but the actor has the physical presence for the part. More importantly, his performance balances controlled vulnerability with sudden anger. That combination gives Marvel a useful starting point if it wants a Wolverine who feels familiar without repeating Jackman’s interpretation beat for beat.

There are reasonable criticisms of the game’s story. It attempts to combine numerous Logan arcs and wider X-Men plotlines, which can feel crowded or confusing for players without at least a moderate knowledge of mutant comic-book history. Those creative choices will not satisfy every Marvel fan either.

Even so, McIntyre is among the most dependable elements of the approximately 15-hour adventure. The material does not always make the most of him, but he shows enough range to justify a serious conversation about the MCU role. Marvel now has a substantial audition for its next Wolverine sitting inside a PS5 game.

The one obvious compromise

McIntyre would not deliver the short, comic-accurate version of Logan that many fans want. McIntyre is 6’1”, making him considerably taller than the character’s traditional depiction.

That may be a deal-breaker for some viewers, but a strong performance matters more than height alone. For readers following the wider arcade and gaming news conversation, Marvel’s Wolverine is a useful reminder that a game adaptation can provide a compelling screen test—even when the surrounding release attracts controversy. Fans considering their own home setup can also explore arcade machines, compare options in the arcade machine buying guide, or choose a smaller bartop arcade for a compact gaming space.
