Lego’s original PlayStation recreation launches this week, giving collectors a brick-built version of Sony’s first home console alongside small tributes to two early PlayStation games.

A brick-built original PlayStation

The 1,911-piece set recreates the original PlayStation at near 1:1 scale. It includes the console, a matching controller and several display features inspired by the system’s early history.

A working Open button sits on the front-right of the console. Pressing it raises the spring-loaded lid and reveals two miniature scenes inside: one based on Gran Turismo from 1997 and another inspired by Ape Escape from 1999. The interior also includes a large Lego interpretation of the classic PlayStation logo.

How the piece count compares

This PlayStation model sits between several other Lego video-game console recreations in size. The Atari 2600 set contains 2,532 pieces, while the Nintendo Entertainment System build has 2,646. The Sega Genesis version is smaller at 480 pieces.

Previous sets have taken different approaches to their extra details. The NES includes a retro television, while the Atari 2600 comes with multiple cartridges. The PlayStation build instead focuses on its opening console design and game-themed interior displays.

A display piece for gaming collections

With its console-scale proportions, functional lid and references to Gran Turismo and Ape Escape, the set is designed primarily as a display model rather than a playable gaming device. It may appeal to collectors who also enjoy browsing arcade news and gaming features or comparing it with full-size arcade machines.

For anyone planning a dedicated games room, RetroCade’s arcade machine buying guide offers a separate starting point for choosing a cabinet. Smaller collections may also benefit from exploring compact bartop arcades, which occupy considerably less space than a full upright machine.
