Following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, attention is firmly on how Hyrule will translate to the big screen. Director Wes Ball, known for The Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, has described his approach as more grounded and realistic, with less reliance on motion-captured computer imagery.

Nintendo announced the movie in 2023. The company is producing it with Sony Pictures Entertainment, while The Legend of Zelda co-creator Shigeru Miyamoto and veteran producer Avi Arad are attached as producers. Miyamoto said in 2023 that he had already been working on the project for “many years”.

the drama

The film is being directed by Wes Ball and is planned as a live-action interpretation rather than a fully computer-generated production. That practical approach may appeal to fans who enjoy seeing game worlds represented through physical costumes, sets and performances.
