Lanterns season 2 remains undecided as John Stewart moves into the DCU film slate
Lanterns season 1 has concluded, resolving its central storyline while leaving viewers with plenty of questions about what comes next. DC Studios has not approved a second season, but the future of Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart is considerably clearer.

Speaking to IGN while promoting Clayface, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran said another season would depend on whether HBO, DC, executive producer Chris Mundy and the wider creative team can develop a successor worthy of the first.
“If … the collective group of HBO and DC and Chris Mundy and the team all feel like we’ve got something that is a worthy successor to quite a beloved first season of television, then I wouldn’t be surprised to see more,” Safran said.
Asked directly whether Lanterns season 2 had been greenlit, Safran gave a straightforward answer: “No.”

John Stewart’s story continues
The first season ended with John Stewart choosing to protect Earth as an independent Green Lantern rather than serve under the Guardians of the Universe. That decision leaves the character positioned for a larger superhero role in next year’s Man of Tomorrow, the upcoming Superman sequel.

Safran also explained why Stewart was introduced through television instead of making his first appearance in a feature film. He said episodic storytelling gives DC more space for character development and can provide a route for television characters to enter the film universe.

What comes next for DC Studios
The next DC Universe television project is scheduled to be The People v. Gorilla Grodd in 2027. The true-crime-style docuseries will star Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. DC Studios has not yet decided which project will follow it.
Safran said several projects are competing for the next position across film and television. He added that DC has a strong animation slate moving forward, while the live-action schedule remains less settled.

Safran also confirmed that the upcoming Mister Miracle series has its lead performers in place. In animation news, Scott Snyder is writing scripts for an Absolute Batman animated series. James Gunn, meanwhile, has not selected the next project he will direct.
While Lanterns season 2 has no official approval, John Stewart’s return in Man of Tomorrow means the character is not disappearing from the DC Universe. Fans will have to wait for a further announcement before a second television season becomes certain.
