HBO’s Lanterns begins as a science-fiction detective story told across different points in time. The main investigation unfolds in 2016, while scenes from 1996 and 2026 reveal how the partnership between Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart will change.

In 1996, Hal is a relatively inexperienced Green Lantern who has already lost his father. That early loss helps explain why he is willing to live dangerously and accept the ring. John, meanwhile, is still a child whose parents have deliberately raised him to be fearless, preparing him for a future as a Green Lantern.

Their work takes them to Rushville, Nebraska, after a mass shooting at the local football stadium. Hal suspects the incident may involve extraterrestrials, despite the arrested suspect appearing to be human.

During the interrogation, Hal uses his experience with aliens to force the suspect to reveal his true nature. The alien says his mission involves “war” and “vengeance”, but refuses to provide further details. Instead, a “biometric neutron device” embedded in his skeleton triggers a suicide blast.

Hal uses his ring to form an energy bubble, containing most of the explosion. The action appears to close the episode’s central case, but the apparent epilogue immediately changes the stakes.

In 2026, John drives through the snow to the ruined building and football stadium in Rushville. He meets Sheriff Kerry in the stands, at the same location where he and Hal sat a decade earlier. There, they find Hal frozen in the snow with a gunshot wound to the forehead and blood on his face.

John checks Hal’s right hand and finds no ring—not even a Green Lantern ring. The song “Knievel” by Scud Mountain Boys plays over the credits, giving the sequence a mournful alt-country mood linked to the self-destructive pursuit of danger.

The implication is stark: the confident and powerful Hal Jordan seen in 2016 is destined to die alone in the winter of 2026.

Is Hal Jordan really dead?

Comic-book stories leave room for reversals, especially when a series has already introduced alien shapeshifters. Some viewers have theorized that the corpse could be a construct, a shapeshifting alien or another form of deception.

However, the creative team has presented Hal’s death as a central premise rather than a simple fake-out. Co-creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King built the series around a murder mystery investigated by a Green Lantern.

How can Hal appear after his death?

The series’ timeline means Kyle Chandler is not simply removed after the first episode. Most of the story remains set in 2016, giving the show time to develop Hal and John’s relationship while the audience knows where it is heading.

Earlier in the episode, John encounters a “Halogram”: a digital copy of Hal’s consciousness stored in the Green Lantern ring. The message sends the pair towards Rushville. That detail leaves open the possibility that a Halogram still exists in Hal’s ring, wherever the ring is now.

As a result, Hal may continue to appear in the 2026 storyline without being alive in the conventional sense. The same device could also allow Chandler to return in another DC Universe project as a recorded or digital version of Hal.

Is John Stewart already a Green Lantern in 2026?

It would be easy to assume that John has become a fully active Green Lantern by 2026, particularly after Hal is found without his ring. The episode is more careful than that. In John’s first 2026 scene, he raises his right hand while drinking from a portable cup, and no ring is visible.

That matters because John previously wears Hal’s ring on his right hand. He may eventually receive a different ring, or he may simply not have one with him during ordinary human moments. Either way, John’s future as a Green Lantern appears to have arrived—but perhaps not by the time he discovers Hal’s body.
