Kit Harington’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe looks increasingly unlikely after the long-delayed Blade film was cancelled. The actor’s Dane Whitman was introduced in Eternals, but the character’s promised transformation into the Black Knight has never continued.
What happened to Dane Whitman?
Eternals, directed by Chloé Zhao, arrived in 2021 with a post-credits scene that pointed towards a larger role for Whitman. The sequence showed him taking possession of the Ebony Blade before an unseen voice asked whether he was ready for it.
That moment appeared to set up Harington’s return as Whitman embraced his comic-book identity as the Black Knight. The voice belonged to Mahershala Ali, who made his only Marvel appearance as Blade in that scene.
Harington has described Whitman as a “wicked character” and “a great parable of addiction”, suggesting there was still plenty of dramatic ground to explore. For now, however, Marvel has not announced a follow-up story for the character.
Why the character’s return now seems doubtful
In an interview, Harington said he would like to return but does not believe there is currently a plan for it. His comments follow Ali’s statement in July that he had “moved on” from playing Blade.
“I don’t think there’s any plan to. I hate to break it to you.”
Ali also said Marvel held him under contract and had the resources to make the film, adding that the project would have happened if the studio had wanted to proceed. His departure makes the post-credits connection between Blade and Black Knight even harder to resolve.
Eternals was a major commercial and critical disappointment by Marvel’s usual standards. Since its release, there has been no confirmed sequel and no announced return for its principal cast in another MCU project.
Could Dane Whitman still appear?
Marvel’s secrecy leaves a small possibility that Harington’s comments are deliberately cautious. A surprise appearance in a future project, including Avengers: Doomsday, cannot be completely ruled out.
Even so, the cancellation of Blade removes the clearest connection to Whitman’s next chapter. With a new MCU phase taking shape, Marvel appears more interested in moving forward than revisiting unresolved threads from Eternals.
