Kingdom Hearts has been identified as one of Disney’s nine billion-dollar game franchises, adding a major commercial milestone to the series ahead of this weekend’s D23 fan expo.

Disney executive vice president of global games Sean Shoptaw named the Square Enix series in a news release discussing the company’s games portfolio. The announcement did not list all nine franchises, but it specifically confirmed Kingdom Hearts as one of them.
Since launching in 2002, Kingdom Hearts has combined Disney characters and worlds with Final Fantasy elements and original storytelling. The franchise has grown to 13 games across mainline entries, sequels and spin-offs, excluding remasters and collections.

A major D23 weekend for Kingdom Hearts
The timing of Disney’s announcement is significant for fans awaiting more information about Kingdom Hearts 4. D23 will feature a dedicated “Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts” panel, presented as a behind-the-scenes look at the development of the games.

Square Enix has confirmed that the panel will not be offered as video-on-demand afterwards. Viewers therefore need to watch the livestream when it airs on the official Kingdom Hearts YouTube channel on Saturday, 15 August, from 7:30pm to 8:30pm EDT.

The event begins Kingdom Hearts’ 25th anniversary celebrations, which are scheduled to continue through 2027. With the franchise receiving a dedicated panel and renewed attention from Disney, fans have reason to watch closely for news about its next chapter.

Kingdom Hearts 4 remains the big question
Square Enix first announced Kingdom Hearts 4 in 2022 during celebrations for the series’ 20th anniversary. Fans have been waiting for further details, including a release announcement, ever since.
That does not guarantee that D23 will reveal a launch date or new gameplay. However, the anniversary timing, the dedicated panel and Disney’s decision to highlight the series’ billion-dollar status make this one of the most closely watched Kingdom Hearts events in years.

Why the milestone matters to arcade fans
Kingdom Hearts’ commercial reach shows how a game series can grow beyond individual releases into a broader entertainment property. Its mixture of recognisable Disney worlds, role-playing systems and Square Enix characters has helped it remain relevant across multiple generations of hardware.
