Kingdom Hearts is officially heading to Disney Plus as an animated series. Disney made the surprise announcement at the 2026 D23 convention, only a few hours after the case for adapting the long-running Square Enix franchise had been made.

The announcement arrives ahead of the series’ 25th anniversary next year. No release date, episode count, animation studio or story details have been confirmed, but the project finally moves a Kingdom Hearts cartoon from fan wish-list territory into reality.

Why Kingdom Hearts suits animation

Kingdom Hearts already has the structure of an animated adventure series. Sora, Donald Duck and Goofy travel between colourful worlds, encounter characters from familiar Disney films, resolve a local crisis and move on to the next destination.

The games combine expressive anime-inspired heroes, enormous weapons and grand speeches about friendship, identity and the heart. Beneath the melodrama, the original story follows children separated from their homes and each other, holding on to their friendships across impossible distances.

That mixture of sincerity, fantasy and Disney comedy could work for both newcomers and established fans. A television adaptation could simplify the franchise’s famously dense mythology, giving viewers a clearer entry point without requiring knowledge of more than a dozen games, remasters and remakes released across 25 years.

A franchise ready for a wider audience

Disney previously described Kingdom Hearts as a billion-dollar franchise, making a major screen adaptation a logical next step. The series has also become an important part of Disney and Square Enix’s shared entertainment history, rather than a one-off experiment.

There are already useful precedents. Disney has embraced anime-influenced projects including Star Wars: Visions and Disney Twisted-Wonderland: The Animation. Square Enix properties have also reached television, with A-1 Pictures producing NieR: Automata Ver1.1a.

The broader game-adaptation boom offers more evidence. Animated productions such as Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Castlevania and Devil May Cry have shown how game worlds can support strong television storytelling. Kingdom Hearts may have an easier transition than most: its characters, episodic worlds and heightened visual style already feel designed for animation.

What kind of Kingdom Hearts anime could we get?

Disney and Square Enix have several viable directions. The new series could retell the games, streamline the central mythology for younger viewers, or introduce an original story set within the same universe.

A lighter children’s adventure could focus on Sora, Donald and Goofy’s humour and on the Disney worlds that attract younger audiences. It would also let children who already know Donald and Goofy meet Sora without first navigating the franchise’s complicated chronology.

A more stylised and mature production could explore some of the series’ darker material. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days follows a group of exploited young people forming a found family in a dangerous world, while Birth by Sleep centres on the Keyblade wielders Terra, Aqua and Ventus and visits a broader selection of worlds.

Neither approach would be out of character. Kingdom Hearts can move from broad comedy to cosmic tragedy without losing its underlying optimism.

Disney has tried this before

This is not the first attempt to bring Kingdom Hearts to television. Soon after the original game launched, Disney developed an animated pilot with director Seth Kearsley.

The proposed episode sent Sora, Donald and Goofy to Agrabah, where their search for Riku and Kairi intersected with the story of Aladdin. Kearsley later said the animatic tested exceptionally well with children, although Disney shelved the project before it became a full series.

The old pilot demonstrates that the basic concept has long been easy to understand: an earnest young hero, a short-tempered duck and an easygoing dog travel through beloved worlds together. The new Disney Plus project now has the opportunity to develop that idea with the benefit of decades of franchise history.

For readers following the wider games industry, the announcement is another example of a major game property expanding beyond its original format. RETROCADE’s Arcade Blog covers more gaming and arcade news, while the Arcade Videos collection offers related industry viewing.

From an unlikely collaboration to a Disney Plus series

Twenty-five years ago, the partnership between Disney and Square Enix was so unexpected that producer Shinji Hashimoto reportedly pitched the idea during a chance meeting with a Disney executive in an elevator. Today, Kingdom Hearts is established enough to receive its own D23 celebration and a dedicated streaming adaptation.

The D23 programme included a one-hour “Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts” panel featuring creatives from Disney, Pixar and Square Enix. Sora and Riku English-language voice actors Haley Joel Osment and David Gallagher appeared alongside Kingdom Hearts 4 co-director Tai Yasue. A polished Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer had also been shown during a June Nintendo Direct, although the game did not have a release date at the time covered by the announcement.

With the anime now confirmed, Disney and Square Enix can choose whether to preserve the games’ elaborate mythology or reshape it for television. Either way, the series has the characters, worlds and emotional foundation to make the move work.
