Josh Brolin is open to a Thanos and Doctor Doom clash
Josh Brolin has not ruled out a future Marvel confrontation between Thanos and Doctor Doom, although the actor stopped short of predicting who would win.
Brolin was attending New York Comic Con 2026 to promote Whalefall, an upcoming film directed by Brian Duffield and adapted from Daniel Kraus’s novel. The story follows a scuba diver, played by Austin Abrams of Resident Evil, after he is swallowed by a sperm whale while searching for his father’s remains. Brolin plays the diver’s father.
Brolin welcomes Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom
During a conversation about Whalefall, Brolin was also asked about his Marvel history. He portrayed Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, while Robert Downey Jr. is set to play Doctor Doom in the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Asked whether Thanos could defeat Doctor Doom, Brolin did not offer a firm answer. Instead, he responded positively to the idea of sharing the screen with Downey again:
“I don’t know. Any confrontation with Downey, I like the idea of. I love that he’s doing that, by the way. I can’t wait to see it.”
That leaves the possibility of a Thanos versus Doom encounter unresolved. The question is particularly interesting because the two characters have already faced one another in Marvel Comics.
What the comics suggest about Thanos versus Doom
In the 2015 Secret Wars storyline, Doctor Doom acquired the powers of the Beyonders. When Thanos confronted him, Doom defeated the Mad Titan in brutal fashion, ripping his spine—and his skull—from his body.
That outcome does not confirm what might happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it gives Doctor Doom a formidable precedent. The question is whether a similar confrontation could appear in Avengers: Secret Wars, currently expected in 2027.
When are the films released?
Whalefall is scheduled to reach cinemas on October 16. Avengers: Doomsday is due on December 18. No confirmed release information or story details for a Thanos and Doctor Doom battle were provided.
