Jamie Dornan has acknowledged the enormous challenge of taking over Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, following Viggo Mortensen’s acclaimed performance in Peter Jackson’s trilogy.

Dornan, known for Fifty Shades of Grey and Once Upon a Time, discussed the casting decision in an interview with L’Officiel, as reported by Slash Film.
“I’ve been asked to play a super-iconic role, and I’ll do my best. But for me, Aragorn will always be just Viggo.”
Mortensen played Aragorn throughout the original The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Dornan said he feels honoured to try to recover some of the energy Mortensen brought to the character, while making clear that he is not attempting to outdo his predecessor.

Why Aragorn’s recasting stands out
Dornan’s casting is particularly notable because several other major performers from the earlier films are returning. Elijah Wood is set to reprise Frodo Baggins, while Ian McKellen will again play Gandalf the Grey. Andy Serkis is also returning as Gollum and directing the film.
Serkis has indicated that digital de-ageing technology will be used for some returning cast members. That makes the decision to recast Aragorn, rather than digitally recreate Mortensen’s earlier appearance, an especially significant one for fans.
What is The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum about?
The story will follow Aragorn and Gandalf as they pursue Gollum, hoping to obtain information about the One Ring. The precise details have not been fully confirmed, but the film is expected to take place between Bilbo’s 111th birthday and Gandalf’s return to the Shire in The Fellowship of the Ring.
The cast will also include newcomers to Tolkien’s world: Kate Winslet, Leo Woodall and Anya Taylor-Joy. Lee Pace will return as Thranduil, the character he played in The Hobbit films.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 17 December 2027. In the meantime, viewers will be able to return to Middle-earth when season three of Amazon’s Rings of Power premieres in the coming weeks.
A major role with a familiar shadow
Dornan’s comments suggest that his approach will be shaped by respect rather than imitation. Aragorn remains closely associated with Mortensen’s performance, but the new film will give Dornan the opportunity to interpret the character within a different chapter of Middle-earth’s history.
