Jake Gyllenhaal will headline Remain, the upcoming supernatural romance from writer-director M. Night Shyamalan. The film is scheduled to reach North American cinemas on 5 February 2027, with its international release beginning on 3 February.

Shyamalan became one of Hollywood’s most recognisable filmmakers after The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs. His later work has divided audiences, from the high-concept thriller Old to Knock at the Cabin and 2024’s deliberately unconventional Trap.

Remain points towards familiar territory for the director: an eerie community, unexplained events and a mystery that gradually changes the meaning of what came before. It also adds the emotional pull of a romance, making the project an unusual combination of Shyamalan’s supernatural storytelling and Nicholas Sparks’ relationship-focused drama.

What is Remain about?

Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor in Remain

Gyllenhaal plays Tate Gordon, a reclusive architect who travels to a small coastal town for his latest project. There he meets Wren, portrayed by Phoebe Dynevor of Bridgerton. The pair form a connection through quiet time together, board games and the beginnings of a relationship.

Wren’s apparently peaceful life conceals a darker truth. Tate soon becomes involved in a mystery surrounding the town, and the story’s romantic mood gives way to something far more unsettling. The teaser suggests that the couple will face a supernatural threat connected to secrets that have remained hidden.

The film is being described as a supernatural romance, but its central mystery is equally important. Viewers can expect a story that initially leaves its true direction unclear before Shyamalan begins revealing what is really happening.

A collaboration that began as an original story

Remain is not a conventional screen adaptation of an existing Nicholas Sparks bestseller. The project began as an original story developed by Sparks and Shyamalan together.

Sparks then wrote the novel version, while Shyamalan wrote the screenplay and directed the film. The book therefore arrived before the movie, but the production was not simply a case of acquiring a completed novel and transferring it to the screen.

What the Remain novel revealed

The novel version was released in 2025 and offered readers an early look at the story. Critical reactions were mixed. Reviewers commonly praised its atmospheric blend of romance, mystery and supernatural horror, while criticising the hurried romance and a mystery some found predictable.

That combination has been likened to The Notebook meeting The Sixth Sense: an emotional love story with a ghostly mystery beneath it. Grief, loss and human connection sit alongside the supernatural elements, giving Shyamalan an opportunity to revisit the kind of mysterious storytelling associated with his earlier successes.
