PS5SX2, a PS2 emulator for jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles, has reached an important milestone: version 2.01 can read compatible physical PlayStation 2 discs, dump their contents and launch the games from the console’s storage.

Using a PS5 to emulate PS2 software is not entirely new. The significant change is the disc support. Owners can place their own PS2 game in a PS5 disc drive and create a playable dump without downloading a ROM from an unauthorised website. It is an intriguing development for fans of retro gaming news and PlayStation history.

The project’s lead coder, Swordpdf, announced the feature on X and documented it in the project’s GitHub release notes. The stated process is straightforward: insert a PS2 disc, allow PS5SX2 to dump it if it has not already been copied, then start the game.

PS5SX2 version 2.01 supports dumping and launching compatible physical PS2 discs directly through a jailbroken PS5.

Not every PS2 disc will work

There is an important hardware restriction. The PlayStation 5’s optical drive supports Blu-ray and DVD media, but it cannot read CDs. Some PS2 games were released on blue-tinted CD discs rather than DVDs, meaning those titles cannot be read by the PS5 drive or dumped to the console’s SSD or an external hard drive through PS5SX2.

The same limitation applies to PlayStation 1 software, because PS1 discs are CDs. As a result, this development does not provide a universal method for loading every PlayStation-era disc. Anyone planning a preservation setup should understand the difference between optical media formats before choosing hardware; our arcade machine buying guide offers broader advice on selecting a retro gaming setup.

An AI-assisted homebrew project

PS5SX2 is also notable for how it was made. Swordpdf has openly described the emulator as an AI-assisted project, with Claude listed among the three contributors on its GitHub repository. That makes it an unusual example of AI-supported homebrew development, although the project still depends on a compatible jailbroken console and remains subject to the PS5’s hardware constraints.

PS3 disc dumping is planned

The project may expand beyond PS2 emulation. Swordpdf has announced work on PS5SX3, an emulator intended to dump PS3 games from physical discs on a PS5. The plan has been discussed on X and in the project’s Discord server.

Swordpdf has also suggested that PS1 disc support could eventually be addressed, although the PS5’s inability to read CDs creates an obvious physical obstacle. Whether that goal can be achieved remains unresolved. For now, PS5SX2’s practical breakthrough is narrower but still significant: compatible DVD-based PS2 games can be dumped from original discs on a jailbroken PS5.
