Spoiler warning: This article discusses major plot details from Insidious: Out of the Further, including its post-credits scene.

Insidious: Out of the Further is the sixth film in the horror franchise and expands its story beyond the Lambert family and series regular Elise Rainier. Elise still makes an important appearance, but this chapter follows a new lead character and her family’s long connection to the Further: a sinister dimension existing alongside our own and populated by dangerous entities.

The film is a reasonably effective horror entry, although it is less frightening and entertaining than some of its predecessors. Its biggest contribution is showing that the series can move beyond its familiar foundations, leaving room for more stories. Viewers who remain through the credits receive a short follow-up involving Cyrus Lem, the new demon who serves as the film’s main antagonist.

The post-credits scene explained

Cyrus Lem is presented as a hippie cult leader who has tormented Gemma, played by Amelia Eve, and her family for much of Gemma’s life. The film’s opening establishes that Cyrus haunted and killed her mother. Unlike several earlier demons, he has a comparatively human appearance: long black hair, multiple rings that clink as he approaches his victims, and a scarf hiding his eyes.

During the climactic confrontation, Gemma discovers more about the abilities passed down through her family. She learns to move objects and people into and out of the Further, turning that power against Cyrus after he abducts her daughter, Maya, played by Island Austin.

Cyrus uses Maya as a means of bringing scores of demons from the Further into the human world. Gemma’s rescue plan traps the creatures inside her house before she transports the entire building into the Further. She returns to the real world and reunites with Maya and her boyfriend, played by Brandon Perea. Cyrus, however, is left behind with the demons, who are furious that he has taken away their freedom.

The post-credits moment returns to Cyrus in the Further. A demon forces him into the same dental chair used earlier in the film, then drills into his teeth with a metal instrument. The sequence mirrors Gemma’s earlier ordeal, when she was restrained in that chair.

Beyond its grim physical punishment, the scene makes an important point about the Further’s inhabitants: the demons do not form a united front. They can turn on one another just as readily as they attack human victims.

Long-time followers also get a brief callback to KeyFace, the demon from Insidious: The Lost Key. KeyFace locks Cyrus inside the torture chamber, while the camera pulls back to reveal the franchise’s recognisable red door.

The sequence offers no definite announcement about the next film, but it reinforces one of the series’ central ideas: the demons have not truly disappeared. Any of them could return if another person becomes trapped in the Further, even if Cyrus is now missing a few teeth.

What could come next for Insidious?

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker characters Chewbacca, Poe, Rey, and Finn look at each other in the Millennium Falcon.

The franchise’s next step is likely to depend heavily on how Out of the Further performs. Insidious: The Red Door, released in 2023, became the series’ highest-grossing film and one of that year’s strongest horror performers. If the new instalment achieves a similar result or does even better, the universe could continue with new filmmakers telling stories beyond the established characters.

A spin-off was announced in 2023 under the title Thread: An Insidious Tale. The proposed film was to star Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani as a couple who travel through time in an attempt to prevent their young daughter’s death, with severe consequences resulting from their actions.

Jeremy Slater was attached as the project’s writer and director. His previous work includes Mortal Kombat II and Moon Knight. At the time covered here, it remains unknown whether the spin-off is moving ahead.
