James Wan and Leigh Whannell launched the Insidious horror series 15 years ago, reshaping modern supernatural cinema with its nightmarish vision of the Further. Although other filmmakers guided the franchise after its third instalment, Wan and Whannell have continued to stay involved, mainly as producers.
That creative connection continues with Insidious: Out of the Further, the sixth film in the series. The new chapter arrives only a few weeks after this update and expands the mythology surrounding the franchise’s most unsettling location.

What is Insidious: Out of the Further about?
The Further is a purgatorial dimension populated by demons and other hostile spirits. It resembles the real world but exists beyond ordinary human experience, and it has been a central source of fear since the first Insidious film.
The upcoming film introduces Gemma, played by Amelia Eve, a young single mother who discovers that she can enter the Further. This ability is unusual because living people are generally unable to travel there except through astral projection.
Gemma soon learns that she can bring beings from the Further into the physical world. That discovery attracts the attention of the evil entities living in the realm, which want to use her power to cross over. Their pursuit places Gemma and her daughter, Maya, in grave danger.
To protect Maya from the disturbing dreams surrounding her, Gemma seeks help from Elise Rainier, the psychic investigator played by Lin Shaye. Elise first appeared in the 2011 original and has featured in all five subsequent films, helping characters understand the Further and the spirits within it.
Elise’s return raises an important question about the film’s timeline. The last time she appeared within the series chronology, she had been killed by the Bride in Black. However, her spirit previously assisted the living in Insidious: Chapter 2, so the new film may once again show her helping from beyond the grave.
Is Insidious: Out of the Further a sequel?
The series does not follow a simple chronological order. Insidious: Chapter 3 and Insidious: The Last Key, for example, take place before the events of the original film.
Out of the Further is described as a direct sequel to 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door. That film revisited the Lambert family after the events of Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2, following the lasting damage caused by their encounters with the supernatural.
It is not yet confirmed how prominently the Lamberts will feature in the sixth film. For the clearest introduction to the story, viewers should watch the first two films and The Red Door before seeing Out of the Further.
