Indie developer says AI search exposed unreleased game details

Polygon - Steam Stock Art - Graffiti

A solo game developer has raised concerns after Google’s AI search reportedly identified secret information about an upcoming character in Operation Octo, a tower-defence game released on Steam in September 2025.

Klub Kofta Studio, the game’s creator, described the incident in a post on Reddit. The developer said a player from the game’s Discord community had been asking Google’s AI deliberately silly questions and received unexpectedly specific answers about the small indie title.

AI returned a name that had not been announced

After hearing about the unusual responses, the developer asked the player to question the system about future content. The AI allegedly supplied the exact name “Vantage Tripod”, which the developer says had never been shared publicly or discussed with an AI system.

The developer said the name appeared only in one Google Docs file. It was not included in the game’s files, code, serialised data, local build or Steam release. Screenshots shared from the Discord conversation showed the participants reacting with surprise as the system produced accurate information about unreleased content.

Klub Kofta Studio suggested the game’s limited online footprint may have made the result appear more convincing. With little public speculation available to confuse the system, the developer said the AI seemed to produce unusually precise information.

Google disputes the private-data explanation

A Google representative said private Workspace material, including Drive and Docs content, is not scanned to train foundational AI models such as Gemini. The company also provided several points about document visibility and account controls:

  • Private Workspace content is not used to train Google’s foundational AI models.
  • A document link can be indexed if it has been shared publicly and made available to search crawlers.
  • Drive users control the sharing settings for their documents.
  • Google provides guidance on reviewing and changing those permissions.

The developer maintained that the character’s name existed in only a single private document and was not present anywhere in Operation Octo. Google’s guidance on managing shared Drive files is available through this resource.

The result is no longer reproducible in the same way

Once the developer’s Reddit post attracted attention, repeating the search reportedly produced the name “Vantage Tripod” alongside the Reddit discussion as a source. The original unexplained response could no longer be recreated independently, according to the developer.

That change highlights a broader problem with AI-generated search summaries: once a claim enters a public discussion, the system may repeat the discussion rather than reveal how the information first appeared. AI search tools have also been criticised for pulling information from Reddit threads, whether reliable or not.

AI summaries can also be influenced or manipulated, creating the potential for inaccurate answers. One earlier example involved a YouTuber persuading Google’s AI search that GTA 6 would include a “twerk button” through a low-effort posting campaign. Further reporting has examined how AI overviews can be manipulated.

Why the incident matters to small studios

Developers discussing the case on Reddit and Bluesky raised concerns about how cloud-stored information may interact with AI features. Some commenters argued that users may be opted into sharing Drive data for purposes including AI improvement, while others worried that highly specific prompts could expose personal information.

Google provides instructions for controlling how activity interacts with Gemini through its support documentation. The discussion also reflects wider concerns about technology companies changing service terms and data practices as AI systems become more common.

For independent developers, the practical lesson is to audit document-sharing permissions, check which accounts and applications can access project material, and treat cloud documents as part of the game’s security perimeter. The incident remains an allegation, and the available information does not establish how the character name reached the AI response.
