Yes. HBO has renewed House of the Dragon for a fourth and final season. It will bring the Targaryen succession conflict, adapted from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, to its conclusion.

What will happen in season 4?
The exact shape of the adaptation remains uncertain. Martin has criticised showrunner Ryan Condal’s changes to the written story, including the removal and combination of characters. As a result, season 4 may not follow every event from the book in the same way.
The broad outcome is clearer: the war ends in tragedy, the dragons die out, and the Targaryens lose the near-mythic power that has protected their dynasty. That decline eventually leaves the house exposed to Robert Baratheon’s coup.
Rhaenyra’s position
Queen Rhaenyra, played by Emma D’Arcy, faces a worsening political crisis. The Hightower army was devastated at Tumbleton, but the battle has also damaged Rhaenyra’s reputation.
Her dragonrider Ulf the White, played by Tom Bennett, defected. Hugh Hammer, portrayed by Kieran Brew, may follow after his wife died at Tumbleton. Although Rhaenyra instructed Daemon, played by Matt Smith, to show restraint, Ulf’s use of dragonfire and Ormund Hightower’s decision to use children as human shields will encourage accounts of the battle that portray her as ruthless.
That image is further harmed by Rhaenyra’s decision to execute the High Septon after he refused to ordain her. The suicide of her pregnant half-sister Helaena, played by Phia Saban, adds another devastating blow.
Aegon, Aemond and the fight for the throne
Rhaenyra’s decision to declare Aegon, played by Tom Glynn-Carney, dead has failed. The king returned with his dragon, Sunfyre, and has since reunited with his brother Aemond, portrayed by Ewan Mitchell.
Aemond wants to repair their relationship by locating Vhagar, his powerful dragon, then joining Aegon in an attempt to remove Rhaenyra. Meanwhile, Rhaenyra’s grip on King’s Landing is fragile. Larys Strong, played by Matthew Needham, has taken the treasury, while most of the Goldcloaks have abandoned their posts after a series of assassinations funded by Ormund.
Daeron Targaryen, played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, is another claimant to the Iron Throne. He remains at large after Tumbleton and is presumed to have escaped with his dragon. More defections and major battles are therefore likely before the succession war is settled.
When could season 4 be released?
HBO has announced a 2028 release for season 4. Filming had not started at the time of the supplied report, and Matthew Needham said he had not seen any scripts.
Each previous season was separated by two years. If that schedule continues, the final season could arrive in June 2028, although that month remains an expectation rather than a confirmed date.
