Spoilers for House of the Dragon season 3 finale.
George R.R. Martin’s frustration with HBO’s adaptation of Fire & Blood became easier to understand after the season 3 finale. His concerns centred on the show’s treatment of Helaena Targaryen and her son, Maelor, and the finale reveals just how significant those changes were.
Martin discussed the alterations in a blog post published on 4 September 2024. The post, titled Beware the Butterflies, was later deleted, although fans preserved and examined it closely.
What happens to Helaena in the season 3 finale?
Rhaenyra Targaryen’s attempt to present herself as a ruler for ordinary people has collapsed by the finale. Ormund Hightower is attacking her reputation from Tumbleton, while news that Aegon and his dragon Sunfyre survived pushes her towards a more aggressive strategy.
That decision places Helaena in danger. Rhaenyra has already sent Alicent Hightower to Harrenhal to kill her own son, Aemond, leaving Helaena largely isolated. Rhaenyra also continues to pressure Helaena for information from her visions, hoping they will reveal whether the war will end in her favour.
Baela confronts Rhaenyra over her treatment of allies, accusing her of using dragonriders as expendable pieces. Rhaenyra is also grieving Jace and losing control of King’s Landing, making her increasingly harsh.
Helaena, who was revealed earlier in the season to be pregnant, has stopped eating. When Rhaenyra tries to make her eat, Helaena condemns Rhaenyra’s desire to become queen and rule, calling those ambitions ugly and worthless. She also invokes their father, Viserys, saying he would disapprove of Rhaenyra’s actions.
Rhaenyra responds by forcing food into Helaena’s mouth. It is the most disturbing sign yet of how far she is prepared to go, especially after Mysaria warns Helaena that she and her child will remain hostages while Rhaenyra holds power.
Helaena’s final appearance comes shortly afterwards. She jumps from a window and is impaled on the battlement spikes below. A servant alerts Rhaenyra, who discovers the body and closes the window. That is where season 3 ends.
Why the butterflies matter
The finale’s imagery gives new weight to Martin’s old blog post. After Helaena’s death, the story cuts to Alicent returning towards King’s Landing. As she approaches a bush, a mass of blue butterflies rises in front of her.
Helaena has been associated with insects, particularly caterpillars, since the first season. The butterflies therefore function as a visual symbol of her death, while also making the title of Martin’s deleted post look like an unusually revealing spoiler.
How the show changed Helaena’s story
In Fire & Blood, Helaena’s death is presented through competing accounts. Some historians and witnesses suggest that she killed herself after her son Maelor was torn apart by a mob at Bitterbridge. Another possibility is that Rhaenyra pushed her from the window to remove a rival claim to the throne.
The television series removes Maelor entirely. Instead, Helaena’s suicide appears to result from her prophetic visions and the escalating cruelty directed at her by Rhaenyra. That change helps explain why Martin objected so strongly to the adaptation’s decisions.

What season 4 could explore
Alicent is likely to return to King’s Landing with serious reason to challenge Rhaenyra. The source material establishes that the Dowager Queen outlives all her children before dying from Winter Fever in 133 AC, but it does not explain exactly how she comes to be confined. Helaena’s death occurring under Rhaenyra’s rule could make Alicent’s future imprisonment far more confrontational.
The finale also changes the trajectory of Ulf the White and Hugh Hammer. At Tumbleton, Ulf fulfils his promise to betray the Black Council, then turns on the Greens as well, burning civilians and enemies. Hugh spends more of the battle searching for his wife, Kat.
In Fire & Blood, Ulf and Hugh are known as the Two Betrayers. The show has not yet had Hugh turn Vermithor against the Black Council alongside Ulf, making his disappearance potentially important. Rhaenyra may view Hugh as a traitor simply because he cannot be found, particularly after Ulf’s betrayal.
Aegon and Aemond have their own unresolved conflict. At Harrenhal, Aegon confronts Aemond over the attempt to kill him, although he suggests forgiveness may be possible if they recover Vhagar and reclaim King’s Landing. The brothers may therefore spend part of season 4 searching for Vhagar before Aegon travels to Dragonstone, which has been left mostly empty following Rhaenyra’s departure.
Rhaenyra’s possible future
Before closing Helaena’s window, Rhaenyra sees the tapestry Helaena has been making. It appears to show not only Helaena’s own death, but also the future Rhaenyra has been demanding: herself as queen, bloodied and dishevelled on the Iron Throne, with flames around her feet and the damaged, vengeful Sunfyre behind her.
That image broadly points towards Rhaenyra’s fate in Fire & Blood, although the series has already departed substantially from the book. Because the book is framed as a historical account assembled from conflicting narrators, its version of events is not always definitive. The season 3 finale embraces that uncertainty, but leaves season 4 with significant questions to answer.
