Heroes of the Storm may be entering a new phase. At BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard Entertainment announced Xal’atath as the game’s first new hero in almost six years.

Xal’atath is scheduled to enter the public test realm next weekend and will also be playable by people attending BlizzCon. The hero is due to reach the full game on 28 September.

Xal’atath connects the MOBA to Warcraft

Players of World of Warcraft will recognise Xal’atath as the Harbinger of the Void and a major figure in the MMO’s recent Midnight expansion. Her arrival gives Heroes of the Storm a direct connection to one of Blizzard’s current storylines.

The announcement matters because Hogger, released in December 2020, was the last new hero added to the roster. Blizzard had ended active development the year before, and subsequent support was largely limited to occasional balance adjustments and bug-fix patches.

Could regular support return?

Blizzard has suggested that Xal’atath may be more than a one-off addition. The company said it could consider creating further heroes if the player response is strong, making this release an important test of renewed interest.

Released in 2015, Heroes of the Storm was Blizzard’s response to the growing multiplayer online battle arena market. Its roster combined characters from Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo and Overwatch. Although the genre grew from custom maps and modding communities linked to Warcraft 3, Blizzard’s official MOBA never reached the same level of success as League of Legends or Dota 2.

By 2018, the game had received far fewer development resources than projects such as World of Warcraft and Hearthstone. New hero releases stopped after 2020, leaving the title with only limited content support for several years.

What the announcement means

One new character cannot guarantee a lasting comeback. Blizzard’s position remains cautious, with future heroes dependent on how players respond to Xal’atath. For now, the character represents both fresh playable content and a measure of whether the community still has enough momentum to justify further investment.

Heroes of the Storm remains available on Mac and Windows PC.
