Clear River Games has confirmed both physical and digital editions. Physical copies are planned for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Digital versions will also be released for those consoles, along with PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One.

For Australian players considering their next arcade news follow, the project is particularly notable for its clear connection to the beat ’em up tradition.

What is Dragon Pearl of Destruction?

Dragon Pearl of Destruction is a retro-style beat ’em up developed by Bitmap Bureau. The studio has built a reputation for arcade-era adaptations and original action games, including the 2D run-and-gun Terminator 2D: No Fate, the beat ’em up Final Vendetta and the hack-and-slash game Battle Axe.

The game features four playable heroes: He-Man, Teela, Man-At-Arms and She-Ra. Each character has a distinct moveset and their own magical abilities, offering some variety across the campaign.

Its Steam listing identifies 13 levels. That points to a relatively compact adventure, although shorter campaigns are common in the beat ’em up genre. More game information is available in this Dragon Pearl of Destruction database entry.

Is He-Man experiencing a comeback?

The new game arrives during a broader period of activity for the Masters of the Universe brand. A recent live-action Masters of the Universe film performed reasonably well with critics but struggled commercially, taking $114 million against a reported budget of $170 million to $200 million. It nevertheless became Prime Video’s most-streamed film for several consecutive weeks.

Television has also kept the property in the spotlight. Netflix’s animated Masters of the Universe ran from July 2021 to January 2024, producing 15 episodes. Earlier, She-Ra: Princesses of Power aired from 2018 to 2020 across 52 episodes.

The latter series rebooted the 1980s show, itself a spin-off of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. It earned strong critical praise and developed a substantial fanbase through its character work, writing and central queer relationship between She-Ra and Catra.

Why arcade fans may want to watch it

A four-character roster, side-scrolling combat and a manageable level count place Dragon Pearl of Destruction firmly in familiar arcade territory. Players building a home setup can explore RETROCADE’s arcade machines range or compare options in the arcade machine buying guide.

Those planning a smaller gaming space may also want to consider bartop arcades, while anyone repairing or customising a cabinet can browse arcade parts.
