Haunted Chocolatier is shaping up to put considerably more emphasis on combat and exploration than Stardew Valley. Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone says the upcoming game is designed for players who enjoyed heading into Stardew Valley’s mines, while still retaining the town-based atmosphere associated with his breakout farming game.
In an interview with British GQ, Barone described Haunted Chocolatier as “more of an action RPG”. Its central loop will focus on adventuring, discovering equipment and growing more powerful, with monsters and boss battles playing an important role.
That direction should appeal to the part of the Stardew Valley audience that treats the mines as a major attraction. While some players prefer farming and fishing without combat, others enjoy the challenge of fighting through the underground areas and improving their character along the way.
A town game with a stronger combat system
Barone also clarified that Haunted Chocolatier will remain what he calls a “town game”. Players can therefore expect the experience to involve settling into a new community, meeting its residents and developing a business, even as exploration and combat take a more prominent position.
Earlier glimpses of the game have already shown bosses, shields capable of stunning enemies and additional off-hand weapons. The game is also expected to explore darker themes. Barone has cited David Lynch as an influence, suggesting that the world may include a surreal edge alongside its cosy town setting.
A larger project without a release window
Haunted Chocolatier has been in development for more than four years, approaching the length of time Stardew Valley spent in development before its release. Barone has not announced a release window, and he has indicated that the new game will be “way bigger” than its predecessor.
That scale comes with significant pressure. Barone acknowledged that millions of people are watching the project and that making different creative choices could disappoint them. His comments help explain why the game’s launch timing remains unconfirmed.
For players who enjoyed the mining sections of Stardew Valley, the expanded action-RPG direction is one of the clearest reasons to keep watching. The challenge will be making the combat feel varied over time, particularly if Haunted Chocolatier is to build on the repetitive qualities some players found in the mines. Whether its new systems can avoid familiar spiral-shaped floors remains to be seen.
