HBO’s new Harry Potter television adaptation has reportedly begun preparing its second season ahead of schedule, even though the first season has not yet premiered.
The series is a complete episodic reboot of the wizarding-world franchise, arriving 15 years after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. Season 1 has finished filming and is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day 2026.
Season 2 appears to be underway
The Hogwarts school year traditionally begins on 1 September, but production on the television series seems to have sent its young cast back to set more than two weeks earlier than that fictional timetable.
Asha Soetan, who plays Quidditch player Angelina Johnson, shared a since-deleted Instagram post on 14 August that indicated she had returned to the Harry Potter set. The post was not an official confirmation, but it strongly suggested that cameras had started rolling on Season 2.
The early start makes practical sense for a show built around a young ensemble. HBO’s plan is for each season to adapt one of J.K. Rowling’s seven original novels: the first season covers Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, while Season 2 moves on to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
A fast production schedule for a young cast
Keeping the production moving may help the actors remain close in age to the students they portray. Long gaps between seasons could otherwise create a familiar problem for coming-of-age franchises, with performers growing much faster than their on-screen characters.
HBO has already expanded the second season’s casting. Kit Harington will play Gilderoy Lockhart, taking over the role after Nicholas Hoult left because of scheduling conflicts. Hoult is also set to appear in Superman.

The first season remains scheduled to debut on Christmas Day 2026. No later premiere date or full Season 2 release timetable has been provided.
