Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to offer far more than high-speed chases and armed robberies. New details about Leonida’s wildlife suggest Rockstar may be building a surprisingly deep nature-focused layer into the open-world game.

Leonida is packed with wildlife

Fresh information from a 14-page Game Informer feature covers GTA 6’s weather, NPCs, regions and leisure activities. The most unexpected detail is the scale of its animal ecosystem: more than 170 creatures are expected across Leonida.

That roster includes monkeys, sharks, armadillos, bears and alligators, alongside a wide range of marine animals. Because Jason and Lucia can go scuba diving, players should also encounter underwater wildlife, including manatees. Earlier footage hinted at the animals through football-themed references to Leonida’s local team, but the new information confirms that manatees will appear in the world itself.

Detailed animals across different habitats

Rockstar’s vice president of dynamic art, Michael Kane, said the team wanted to reflect Florida’s varied ecology across Leonida. That includes cities and countryside, inland and ocean waters, wetlands, swamps and Everglades-style environments.

Animals will have their own movement patterns, while their visual detail goes well beyond what might be expected from a game centred on cars and crime. Some sea creatures will feature iridescence or bioluminescence. Fur is also fully simulated, including colour and coat variations, wetness, dirt matting and clumping during interactions with people and the environment.

GTA 6 hunting

Could hunting return?

A new screenshot showing Jason carrying a rifle while approaching grazing deer strongly suggests that a version of Red Dead Redemption 2’s hunting system could appear in GTA 6. The attention paid to coats and pelts supports that possibility, although Rockstar has not confirmed exactly how hunting will work.

There may be less violent ways to engage with Leonida’s animals. Scuba diving is clearly not a hunting activity, and some creatures can be tracked rather than simply encountered. These trackable animals will reportedly be divided into three categories: Rare, Discoverable and Legendary.

Nature photography could be a better fit

In Red Dead Redemption 2, tracking was mainly tied to hunting. GTA 6, however, takes place in the smartphone era, creating an obvious opportunity for wildlife photography. Jason and Lucia may only lurk on social media because of their criminal lives, but a photography side hustle would give players a reason to document rare animals instead of shooting them.

More than 60 bird species are also planned. That number makes a birdwatching activity seem plausible, especially as birdwatching has become increasingly popular with younger people. A camera-based system inspired by Pokémon Snap would suit the modern setting and give Leonida’s ecology a purpose beyond visual spectacle.

A living world beyond crime

The wildlife details show how extensively Rockstar is drawing on Florida’s distinctive environments. Possible activities could include photographing sea turtles, caring for rescued animals or simply observing creatures in their natural habitats, although those specific activities have not been announced.

Whether players are exploring wetlands, diving offshore or watching birds, the animal system could become one of GTA 6’s most memorable diversions. For players who enjoy detailed virtual worlds, it may offer a quieter counterpoint to the game’s usual criminal chaos.
