Rockstar Games has outlined two major features coming to Grand Theft Auto 6: a more responsive weather system and a wildlife population spanning more than 170 species. The game’s Leonida setting, inspired by Florida, will include tropical storms, hurricanes and highly localised environmental effects.

The details appeared in a 14-page Game Informer published a big 14-page preview on 29 September. Some information has previously emerged through trailers, screenshots, interviews and leaks, but the feature adds further insight into how Rockstar is building the game’s world.

For players interested in how modern games model their environments, the project represents a significant step beyond the fixed weather patterns common in older open-world titles. It also highlights the technical ambition behind a game designed to be explored on a large scale.

Rockstar’s lighting and rendering team describes storms filled with thick cloud, powerful winds and heavy rain. Water will run from roofs and street fixtures, while thunder and lightning will alter the appearance of the sky during severe weather.

The simulation will extend beyond major storms. Rockstar says the game will represent summer breezes and the way wind moves around buildings, including airflow affected by structures, evening coastal breezes and rising warm air.

Wind will move rooftop hair and loose debris, disturb swamp grass and create ripples across the surface of the water. Dynamic cloud formations will travel across the map, allowing conditions to shift between clear winter skies and towering summer or autumn storm clouds with occasional lightning.

More than 170 animal species across Leonida

Leonida will also be populated by a wide range of wildlife. The game is expected to include 170 animal species, including more than 60 bird varieties and over 30 land mammals. Sharks, reptiles and fish will add further diversity to the game’s environments.

Rockstar is applying detailed physical and environmental behaviour to these creatures. The reported examples include accurately rendered feathers and bioluminescent features, while animal fur can respond to contact with people, moisture, dirt and surrounding conditions. Coat colours and textures will also vary.

The animal roster will include non-native and invasive species such as monkeys and armadillos, reflecting the unusual wildlife associated with parts of Florida. Players are expected to encounter and interact with many of the animals while travelling through Leonida.

A rarity system inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2 is returning, along with difficult-to-find Legendary creatures. Rockstar has not yet revealed which animals will receive that status.

Why these details matter for arcade fans

Weather, wildlife and environmental reactions can make a large open world feel more reactive, but they also raise demanding questions about display quality and control response. On a dedicated arcade machine, visual clarity, viewing distance and smooth input are central to the experience.

Players comparing home gaming setups can also browse RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide or explore racing simulators for another way to experience driving-focused games. Those planning a custom build may find the arcade parts range useful when considering controls, displays and cabinet upgrades.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to arrive on 19 November for PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC. Rockstar has not disclosed the identities of the Legendary animals, leaving exploration of Leonida’s wetlands and wider map as one of the game’s unanswered attractions.
