Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on 19 November, but Nintendo Switch 2 owners should not expect to explore Vice City at release. Rockstar has confirmed the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, while a PC version has not been announced.

The possibility of a Switch 2 version has attracted plenty of interest because Nintendo’s newer console is designed to handle more demanding third-party games. However, Nintendo of America boss Devon Pritchard has stopped short of suggesting that Rockstar’s open-world blockbuster is headed to the platform.

Speaking with Variety, Pritchard said Nintendo is still “at the beginning of seeing what the Nintendo Switch 2 can do”. She hopes its improved graphical performance will encourage more major third-party releases and broaden perceptions of the console beyond games aimed at children and families.

“That’s going to be a conversation for Take-Two and Rockstar,” Pritchard said when asked specifically about Grand Theft Auto 6. “Nothing to announce on my end at this time.”

That makes a Switch 2 edition possible in theory, but there is currently no announcement to support it. For now, players planning to visit the game’s fictional Florida setting will need access to one of the announced current-generation consoles.

Call of Duty points to Nintendo’s wider ambitions

Nintendo is nevertheless attracting more prominent third-party projects. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is due to arrive on Switch 2 later this year, marking the series’ return to Nintendo consoles for the first time in more than a decade.

That release will offer an important test of the system’s ability to run large-scale, technically demanding games. It may also help show whether Nintendo’s new hardware can support a wider range of experiences alongside its first-party titles.

Zelda’s 40th anniversary plans

Pritchard’s comments came during a broader discussion that also covered Nintendo’s plans for The Legend of Zelda’s 40th anniversary. The company is preparing several major projects and events for the milestone.

  • A live-action Legend of Zelda film is scheduled for 30 April 2027.
  • A remake of Ocarina of Time is planned for release later this year.
  • A Zelda 40th Anniversary Nintendo Direct announced a very limited concert series.

Pritchard hopes the anniversary programme will appeal both to long-time fans and to people discovering the series for the first time. She added that Nintendo’s plans would be “deliberate and thoughtful”.

What this means for Switch 2 owners

The Switch 2’s growing third-party library may eventually make a port of Grand Theft Auto 6 more plausible, but Nintendo, Take-Two and Rockstar have not confirmed one. Until an official announcement arrives, speculation should not be treated as a release plan.
