GTA 6’s wildest rumour had a real foundation

With Grand Theft Auto 6 approaching its 19 November release, Rockstar Games has begun discussing the long and difficult development of its next open-world crime epic. A detailed Bloomberg report, based on conversations at Rockstar North in Scotland, has now shed light on an abandoned early concept.

The surprising detail is not about the final game, but about what Rockstar originally considered. In 2015, the project reportedly envisioned large areas across both North and South America. That early plan carried the codename “Project Americas” — the same name attached to one of the biggest GTA 6 rumours of 2020 and 2021.

For fans following every supposed leak during the COVID-19 lockdowns, the rumour mill was relentless. Online “insiders” offered fresh claims about the game almost daily. Ideas included Fortnite-style seasonal map changes, cryptocurrency and even a possible appearance by Dr. Dre. Some theories sounded credible; others looked more like elaborate fan fiction.

Project Americas was the most ambitious claim of them all.

What Project Americas was supposed to be

The theory suggested that GTA 6 would break from the series’ usual single-city structure and connect several locations across the Americas. Alleged map leaks even pointed towards a fictional version of Cuba. Others attempted to identify potential locations through domain registrations.

For roughly a year, the idea gained enough momentum that many fans treated it as genuine. At the time, however, the scale of the claims made the project seem unlikely. Each new rumour appeared to expand the supposed map, creating the impression that fans were building the game they wanted to see.

The first official look at GTA 6 in 2023 appeared to settle the question. Rockstar showed a game centred on Leonida, including its modern version of Vice City, rather than a continent-spanning adventure. The earlier theories seemed ready to be forgotten.

Rockstar really did explore the idea

The new reporting changes that interpretation. Project Americas was not entirely invented by fans: it represented a genuine version of the game’s early direction. The exact point at which Rockstar changed course remains unclear, but the development history reportedly involved difficulty settling on a firm vision and contributed to two major delays.

That does not make every leak from the period accurate. It does suggest, however, that some rumours may have reflected fragments of real plans rather than pure invention. Ideas that once seemed impossible — including additional locations or a different supporting cast — may simply have belonged to earlier iterations that never reached the final game.

The revelation also gives the old Cuba speculation a different context. Rockstar has previously used remote locations and major shifts in setting across its games, so fans may reasonably wonder whether Leonida is the whole story. There is still no confirmation that Cuba, Dr. Dre or any other rumoured feature will appear in the finished release.

Why the old rumours still matter

There was a strange appeal to the pre-reveal speculation. With Rockstar saying little, fans scrutinised map images, domain names and supposed insider posts for clues. The result was often unreliable, but it filled the long gap before the first official trailer.

Once 19 November arrives, the Project Americas era will become part of the game’s development history rather than a prediction of its final map. The next major rumour cycle may already be waiting in the wings: discussion around GTA 7 can begin as soon as 20 November.
