Rockstar Games has delayed Grand Theft Auto 6 twice since its original announcement, turning a planned 2025 release into a November 19, 2026 launch. The second postponement reportedly left Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick wondering whether he was being pranked.

Rockstar first announced in May 2025 that GTA 6 would move to May 2026. A few months later, the company announced another delay, shifting the open-world crime game to November 2026.

Bloomberg published a lengthy report examining the game’s development. When GTA 6 was revealed in December 2023, Rockstar had promised a 2025 release window. Company leaders believed that target was achievable, although some developers were less confident.

As production progressed, Rob Nelson, Rockstar North’s head of development and co-studio head, concluded that the team needed more time. The decision reflects a familiar challenge in major game development: balancing an ambitious schedule with the standard of quality expected from a release of this scale.

“You feel a huge pressure and obligation to deliver the highest-quality game in the most aggressive time scale that you can,” Nelson said. “And then you keep evaluating it as you go. And then you have to decide when you get within striking distance of that if it is actually achievable.”

Developers then asked Rockstar head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe to contact Zelnick. He approved the first delay. Later in 2025, Kolbe had to make another call and request a further postponement, this time moving GTA 6 to November 2026.

“I think he said, ‘You’re kidding.’ Please tell me you’re kidding,” Kolbe recalled.

After the reasons were explained, Zelnick accepted the decision. Kolbe said the team was fortunate to have a leader willing to understand the situation rather than simply demand that the game ship on schedule.

Her comments point to a wider problem in the games industry: releasing too early can leave teams and players dealing with unfinished products. For readers following the business side of gaming, the RETROCADE arcade blog covers more news and industry developments.

Zelnick described extending development as a “wise investment in time” and resources when it allows a game to reach the level of quality it is capable of achieving. Even so, asking for a second delay was clearly an uncomfortable moment for both Kolbe and the development team.

With GTA 6 now scheduled for November 19, 2026, Rockstar has more time to complete the project. Until then, players can explore RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide or browse the latest arcade machines while waiting for gaming’s next major open-world release.
