Grand Theft Auto 6 will be eligible for the 2026 Game Awards, avoiding a timing problem that had caused uncertainty around Rockstar’s enormous upcoming release.

The game is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, close to the point when nominations for Geoff Keighley’s annual awards showcase would normally be finalised. Missing the cutoff could have pushed GTA 6 into the 2027 ceremony, leaving it to compete against games released almost a year later.

GTA 6 makes the eligibility window

The 2026 Game Awards FAQ sets the main eligibility deadline at Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. Pacific Time. Games must be commercially available to customers by then to qualify for the standard award categories.

Games must be made commercially available to customers on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT. In the Players’ Voice category, games must ship on or before November 30, 2026.

With its November 19 launch, GTA 6 falls inside the primary window. The Players’ Voice category has a later November 30 deadline, giving the game an additional margin there.

The schedule is considerably more generous than the previous year. For the 2025 Game Awards, nominations had already been announced by November 17, meaning the nomination process has shifted much later for the 2026 event.

Review timing remains a separate challenge

Meeting the release cutoff does not automatically guarantee a strong awards showing. Voting critics need enough time with each nominated game to form an informed view, and individual outlets use different systems for deciding which categories and titles they support.

Some publications distribute ballots across their teams, while others rely on senior staff or the critics who completed a particular game. No outlet can play every major release in a year, so review coverage often influences which games receive serious consideration.

Rockstar has described GTA 6 as a large game with a substantial map and features designed to encourage multiple playthroughs. That scale could make it difficult for critics to complete, discuss and assess before awards voting closes.

According to industry leaker NateTheHate, review copies could reach media outlets and creators before the end of October. If that happens, critics would have more time to evaluate the game before voting.

A potentially open Game of the Year race

By arriving just before the deadline, GTA 6 would enter what the source material describes as a relatively open Game of the Year field. Resident Evil Requiem and Control Resonant have reportedly attracted strong reviews, but neither has been presented as an obvious favourite on the level of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Elden Ring or Baldur’s Gate 3 in their respective years.

Prediction markets currently put GTA 6 at a 68 per cent chance of winning before the public or critics have played it. That figure reflects anticipation rather than a confirmed assessment of the finished game.

The remaining question is whether Rockstar’s latest release can match the extraordinary expectations surrounding it. With just over a month separating the launch from the ceremony, the 2026 Game Awards will provide the answer.
