Grand Theft Auto 6 will be eligible for the 2026 Game Awards, but Rockstar’s blockbuster has only just cleared the event’s release deadline.

GTA 6 makes the awards cutoff
The Game Awards has confirmed that games must be commercially released before midnight Eastern Time on 20 November 2026 to qualify for its awards. Titles released by 30 November can also compete in the fan-voted Player’s Voice category.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on 19 November, putting it inside the main eligibility window by less than 24 hours. The 2026 deadline is close to the previous year’s cutoff of 21 November 2025. The Game Awards’ updated FAQ explains the eligibility rules.
For Australian players, the practical timing will depend on the local launch schedule, but the key point is unchanged: the game is currently set to arrive before the international awards deadline.
Review timing could affect the decision
Industry insider NateTheHate has claimed that review codes may reach critics before the end of October. If that happens, judges should have meaningful time to play the game before voting begins.
There is still a potential complication. Rockstar may delay review copies if it wants to reduce the risk of leaks. Last year, the 2025 nominees were announced on 17 November, just four days before the release cutoff. A late review-code rollout could therefore leave judges with little time to assess GTA 6 for Game of the Year.

How the awards show has changed
The Game Awards remains the biggest gaming-focused awards event, although it has often been criticised for resembling a showcase more than a traditional ceremony. Announcements and trailers for unreleased games have historically taken substantial space alongside the awards themselves.
The 2025 presentation was received more positively because winners had more room to speak and reflect. Jennifer English, recognised for Best Performance, was among those who benefited from that format.
Which games could challenge GTA 6?
Grand Theft Auto 6 has an obvious path into the Game of the Year conversation, even before launch, thanks to Rockstar’s track record and the scale of interest surrounding the sequel. However, 2026 already has a substantial field of contenders.
Potential nominees include Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, Mina the Hollower, Forza Horizon 6, Big Walk, Pokopia, Pragmata, Star Wars: Zero Company, Blood of the Dawnwalker and Resident Evil Requiem.
Review aggregators including OpenCritic and Metacritic show a broad group of highly rated releases rather than one clear leader. The year has not yet produced a consensus favourite on the level of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 or Baldur’s Gate 3. That could change when GTA 6 arrives in November.
Why this matters to arcade fans
Major console and PC releases can influence the wider games industry, from driving-game design to the demand for dedicated gaming spaces. Readers planning a home setup can compare options in the Arcade Machine Buying Guide, browse full-size arcade machines or explore racing simulators for a more focused driving experience.
