Paramount has enjoyed strong results from its live-action Sonic the Hedgehog projects. The studio is now turning to another part of Sega’s catalogue with an animated revival of the classic arcade brawler Golden Axe.
Based on the debut trailer, the new series appears to follow the familiar formula of contemporary streaming animation. That impression has left many fans disappointed, particularly those hoping the adaptation would foreground the distinctive fantasy spectacle of the arcade games.
The voice cast includes Community actor Danny Pudi, Widow’s Bay actor Matthew Rhys, comedian Lisa Gilroy and Liam McIntyre, who is also associated with the upcoming polygonal Wolverine. The story centres on a group of fantasy warriors trying to wrest the powerful Golden Axe from Death Adder.
The original beat ’em up had a simple sword-and-sorcery premise, but its arcade identity came from the details surrounding that setup. Players encountered rideable creatures, enormous monsters and colourful fantasy worlds. The trailer instead presents a style that feels close to a standard streaming cartoon, complete with self-aware jokes and broad sarcasm.
A familiar quest played for laughs
In one exchange, the chainmail-clad Tyris Flare describes the party’s mission as a predictable march through increasingly difficult enemies before the inevitable final confrontation with Death Adder.
“We’re going to do what we do best. Face a series of progressively harder enemies until we have a big final battle with Death Adder.”
The preview repeatedly jokes about the structure of the original game and the absurdity of existing in a high-fantasy setting. For some viewers, that self-awareness makes the show feel seemingly embarrassed of itself, instead of confident in the material it is adapting.
Several reactions have criticised the Rick and Morty-style sarcasm, while others have questioned why Golden Axe needs to be treated as a punchline. The response is especially notable because the game series itself has not been updated in nearly 20 years. There is still an obvious opportunity for a fantasy cartoon with the dramatic, painted grandeur associated with Boris Vallejo’s artwork. The trailer’s reception suggests that fans would rather see Golden Axe embrace its muscular arcade-fantasy character than lean so heavily on irony.
