The God of War Laufey Collector Box includes a light-up statue, a 51-card deck and a mini art book—but not the game itself. The set first appeared on the Spanish PlayStation Store before similar listings began surfacing in other regions.

The US release and pricing have not yet been announced. The UK edition is listed at £130, which points to a price of roughly $130 before Australian details are confirmed. Anyone who wants to play will need to purchase the game separately, adding another $70 based on the pricing reported with the announcement.

For collectors, the main display piece is a resin statue of Faye fighting enemies with her long sword and purple ribbon. Blue lights illuminate accompanying cubes, while the 51 Oracle cards feature individual illustrations inspired by Faye’s journey and are described as capable of Everywhen magic. The final item is a small art book rather than a full-size volume.

That makes this an unusually expensive combination of a statuette, card deck and booklet without the product the collection is built around. PushSquare’s report details the early listing, while the UK’s version is £130.

A growing collector’s-edition problem

The situation looks even less reasonable beside Rockstar’s $400 GTA 6 collector’s edition, which also omits the game. Including a download code would require little more than adding a printed code card. The physical items may not cost more than about $60 to produce at most, according to the criticism surrounding the set, making the missing game particularly difficult to justify. Unlike GTA 6, God of War Laufey is also receiving a physical release.

This is not the first confusing God of War collector’s launch. In 2023, Ragnarök was offered in Collector’s and Jötnar editions. Both were intended to include a download code for the complete game, along with a steelbook display case that contained no disc. When buyers found that the download code was missing, Sony worked to correct the error. This time, the game’s absence appears to be an intentional part of the package.

Why leave out a game?

One possible explanation is manufacturing efficiency. A multiplatform release may require separate collector’s-edition SKUs, packaging and game versions for each console. That logic does not apply neatly here, however, because Laufey is a PS5 exclusive. The result instead looks like a test of how much merchandise can be sold separately while keeping the package profitable.

For Australian collectors comparing premium releases, the distinction between merchandise and playable hardware is worth keeping in mind. RETROCADE’s Arcade Blog covers gaming and industry news, while the Arcade Machine Buying Guide can help when weighing a complete entertainment purchase. Those seeking a dedicated setup can also browse arcade machines rather than paying collector pricing for a box that still requires a separate game.
