Glen Powell’s version of The Running Man is a far more faithful adaptation of Stephen King’s novel than the 1987 film. Ben Richards finally has a reason to keep going
Powell plays Richards as a father driven by an immediate family crisis. His daughter Cathy needs medicine, while his wife Sheila, played by Jayme Lawson, works as much as possible after Ben is banned from employment. With the family struggling financially, Ben volunteers for the Network in the hope of earning enough money to help his child.
He initially seeks one of the less dangerous contests. Instead, the Network notices his anger and selects him for The Running Man, the most lethal option. Contestants must survive while hunters pursue them over an extended period, with the public watching the chase unfold.
This motivation gives Powell’s Richards a clear emotional centre. The 1987 film also used the idea of Richards being arrested and forced into the contest, but it did not establish the same family-driven urgency. The most significant structural improvement is the move away from a confined competition arena. The 2025 film presents the pursuit as a worldwide manhunt, much closer to the novel’s concept. Wright’s adaptation does not reproduce every detail of King’s ending. Its conclusion takes a more hopeful direction than the novel’s darker final moments. Measured against inflation, the original film’s box-office performance would be comparable with the newer production’s budget. However, the 2025 film earned $69.5 million worldwide. The Running Man may not have become the commercial success its production cost demanded, but its performance is separate from its effectiveness as an adaptation.
