Gen Con attendees were forced to take shelter in Indianapolis on Saturday after severe weather brought tornado warnings, torrential rain and leaks across the Indiana Convention Center.
The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for central Indiana at about 5:30pm. The warning covered downtown Indianapolis and the convention centre, where tens of thousands of tabletop fans gather each year. The venue’s public-address system instructed attendees to move to safer areas inside the building.
Heavy rain soon began penetrating the roof, sending water onto parts of the show floor and threatening tables, merchandise and valuable cardboard games. The disruption offered a sharp reminder that protecting physical stock is part of running any gaming event, whether the equipment is a tabletop display or a full arcade machine.
Images and video shared by attendees showed water falling from several points above the convention floor. One attendee, who said they had attended Gen Con for 15 years, expressed concern for the affected vendors in a post shared on pic.twitter.com/TkDRsiDIq0, with the scene dated August 1, 2026.
Publisher Mythworks posted footage and commentary showing a large stream of water falling onto tables. Another video captured the scene as staff placed large rubbish bins beneath the leaks. The playtest area appeared to take much of the incoming water, while other vendors said they witnessed tables in their sections being affected as well.
Attendees were sheltering inside the building while the warning remained active. Gen Con is North America’s largest tabletop gaming convention. Founded by Dungeons & Dragons creator Gary Gygax, it began in Wisconsin in 1968 before moving to Indianapolis in 2003.

Convention resumes after warning
The tornado warning was lifted after several hours, and no injuries were reported. Conditions later returned to normal, allowing Gen Con to continue as planned on Sunday.
