Gears of War: E-Day is available from October 1 for players who purchased early access to the latest Xbox console exclusive. However, several familiar features are missing at launch as developer The Coalition rebuilds the series’ core gameplay systems with new technology.

A new gameplay sandbox from the ground up

In a blog post, The Coalition said development began with an entirely fresh gameplay sandbox. The aim was to create a more consistent experience across the campaign, player-versus-environment modes and player-versus-player multiplayer.

The rebuilt foundation also supports changes to cover, combat and enemy design. The trade-off is that the studio could not bring every established Gears of War feature into the launch version. Which Gears features are missing?

The Coalition confirmed that Meat Shields, Chainsaw Duels and some weapons from earlier games are not available at launch. Online features, including Private Lobbies and leaderboards, are also absent for now.

The studio stressed that these omissions do not mean the features have been permanently removed from the franchise. Its team is assessing how and when to restore or improve fan-favourite systems, either through post-launch updates or in a future title.

The absence of Private Lobbies and ranked multiplayer has caused particular frustration among long-time players. E-Day is the first new series entry since Gears 5, which launched seven years ago, making expectations around its multiplayer return especially high.

Development changes and player feedback

E-Day introduces major visual upgrades alongside overhauled traversal and other changes to moment-to-moment play. Even so, the launch gaps have raised questions about the project’s development timeline. The Coalition was previously rumoured to have been working on two smaller projects before the new Gears game; both of which were reportedly canceled.

Former professional Gears player Guy “Blaze” Spencer expressed support for The Coalition, saying the studio had responded well to feedback and that he was interested in seeing how E-Day develops. The developer has already detailed balance adjustments to weapons and mechanics following its beta.

E-Day’s seasonal content plan

Versus Ranked is scheduled to arrive on October 13. The first season will run through December 1 and include limited-time events themed around Halloween, 20 Years of Gears and Thanksgibbing.

Season 2, titled Legacy and Beyond, will follow with content built around a 20-year celebration of the franchise’s “greatest hits”. The remaining season names announced by the studio are:

  • Season 3: Infiltration
  • Season 4: Pendulum
  • Season 5: Devotion

Players will therefore need to wait for the seasonal roadmap and future updates to see when the missing multiplayer features, weapons and combat systems return. Those planning a dedicated home gaming space can also explore RETROCADE’s arcade parts and DIY arcade kits for hands-on projects.
