Gamescom has grown from a European trade show into the world’s largest gaming industry event. With its 2026 edition approaching, organisers say the focus is not on chasing bigger headlines, but on continuing the long-term expansion of the Cologne event and its international community.

How Gamescom reached the top

The event began in 2002 under the name Games Convention and spent its first six years in Leipzig, Germany. In 2009, it moved to Koelnmesse in Cologne, where it has been held annually ever since.

Gamescom’s global profile increased further after E3 ended following the COVID-19 pandemic. Its Opening Night Live presentation, with trailers, announcements and game reveals, now attracts a worldwide digital audience alongside the people attending in person.

That increased attention has not changed the event’s overall approach. Tim Endres, Gamescom director at Koelnmesse, said the show’s growth has come through steady development in its scale, international reach and digital presence rather than a sudden change in direction.

Over time, organisers expanded the hybrid format and introduced events including Gamescom Opening Night Live, the Gamescom Awesome Indies Show, Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show and Gamescom LATAM. The end of E3 has given Gamescom a greater share of the global spotlight, but Endres described the response as excitement rather than pressure.

Stefan Heikhaus, Gamescom director at the German Games Industry Association, said the team feels a strong responsibility to serve players and the industry each year. However, he characterised that responsibility as enthusiasm. Visitor, exhibitor and partner feedback continues to shape the show.

What changes in 2026?

The 2026 programme is set to include a closer connection between the developer conference and the main event, further growth for the indie showcase, and the arrival of Games Done Quick. Organisers also plan to place greater emphasis on community-led formats, including the social stage.

Games Done Quick comes to Cologne

Games Done Quick will hold a three-day, in-person event at Gamescom from August 28 to 30. It is the speedrunning organisation’s first in-person event outside North America.

The programme will be streamed on Twitch and YouTube, while its charity initiative will support Gaming for Democracy. Its inclusion gives Gamescom another direct connection between the physical show floor and the wider online gaming audience.

Will Gamescom expand to North America?

Organisers are already planning the event’s next several years, although they have not announced a North American edition. Heikhaus said the priority remains Cologne as the central meeting place for the global industry and gaming community.

That strategy will be supported by digital programming and the existing international events in Latin America and Asia. Endres also noted that the ideal long-term future is difficult to define: the vision he had for Gamescom in 2009 looks very different from the event it has become in 2026.

Gamescom 2026 games to watch

Dozens, potentially hundreds, of games are confirmed for Gamescom 2026. The announced line-up includes The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, The Blood of Dawnwalker, Alien: Isolation 2, Fable, Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Metro 2039.

The full and developing game list can be checked through the Gamescom 2026 games directory. For arcade fans, the event’s mixture of major releases, indie projects, hardware and community programming also offers a useful snapshot of where interactive entertainment is heading.

Smaller rooms may suit compact bartop arcades, while driving-game enthusiasts can look at racing simulators.
