Game of Thrones: The Mad King is returning to the stage in London in 2027, following a sold-out Royal Shakespeare Company run in Stratford-upon-Avon that finished in September.

The production is a prequel to HBO’s Game of Thrones, created by George R.R. Martin and based on the world of his A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Martin announced the London move on his blog after attending the Stratford-upon-Avon premiere.
“I had a splendid time in Stratford-upon-Avon for the premiere of Duncan Macmillan and Dominic Cooke’s epic new stage production of Game of Thrones: The Mad King,” Martin wrote, adding that he was excited for the show to reach a wider London audience.
When will The Mad King play in London?
The London venue and performance dates have not yet been revealed. Casting details are also still to come, so it is not confirmed how many members of the original cast will return.
The Mad King is directed by Dominic Cooke and written by Duncan Macmillan, whose previous work includes Every Brilliant Thing. Australian fans will need to wait for the London production details before planning a visit.

What is Game of Thrones: The Mad King about?
The play explores the events leading towards Robert’s Rebellion, with the jousting tournament at Harrenhal serving as a major turning point. Its characters include younger versions of Ned Stark and Robert Baratheon, alongside Lyanna Stark, Rhaegar Targaryen and the Mad King.
At the centre of the story is the relationship between Rhaegar and Lyanna. Viewers familiar with Game of Thrones will know that their romance ultimately leads to the birth of Jon Snow.

A Shakespearean approach to Westeros
The Royal Shakespeare Company’s production uses stagecraft to give Martin’s political drama a different character. Its jousting sequences feature puppetry, adding a distinctive theatrical element to the prequel’s medieval spectacle.
The production can be approached either as an expansion of the television universe or as a standalone Shakespearean-style drama. Its London run should appeal to Game of Thrones followers and theatre audiences alike, although further information about tickets, dates and performers has not been announced.
