American Pinball has revealed its fifth pinball machine, Galactic Tank Force, following a series of deliberately unusual teasers. The game was announced for 22 March 2023, with its first public appearance scheduled for the Texas Pinball Festival on the Friday that followed.
Set on Luminar, a remote moon in the Namdron Galaxy, the game casts players as the newest recruit in the Galactic Tank Force. Their assignment is to protect a newly established lunar research base from Empress Annoya and her invading army.
The central vehicle is the Model 375A Battle Tank, which players use against enemy tanks, robots and UFOs. Major Duke Moonwalker provides guidance from an orbiting space station while the battle unfolds across the moon and beyond.
The trailer makes the machine’s tone clearer than the formal introduction. Its combination of space combat, live-action presentation and broad humour recalls the eccentric style of 1990s full-motion-video games.
That FMV influence will not appeal to everyone, but it gives Galactic Tank Force a distinct personality. Actors appear to help lead players through the game, potentially providing more narrative direction than is common in pinball. The approach could also make the rules easier for casual players to follow, although a hands-on game would be needed to judge how successfully it works.
One familiar face is Kerri Hoskins, who also appeared in several Midway arcade titles during the 1990s, when digitised actors were becoming a notable feature of arcade games.
American Pinball is offering four editions: Standard, Classic, Signature and Deluxe. The Signature and Deluxe models appear to include the tank topper, complete with a raised turret. That feature may require additional consideration in a typical pinball setup because it extends above the playfield, while the side-panel artwork adds to the machine’s visual appeal.
The machine was also expected to appear at Amusement Expo 2023 the following week.
