Who made the Robot Devil? It is one of Futurama’s enduring unanswered questions, and showrunner David X. Cohen has now offered a possible explanation without closing the case.

Beelzebot, usually called the Robot Devil, first appeared in the 1999 season-one episode “Hell Is Other Robots”. Voiced by Dan Castellaneta, best known as Homer Simpson, the musical villain rules over Robot Hell. Rather than existing in another supernatural dimension, Robot Hell is located beneath a run-down amusement park in New Jersey.

The character returned throughout several Futurama revivals and played a particularly prominent role in the season-four finale, “The Devil’s Hands Are Idle Playthings”. Despite those appearances, the series has never established who built him or how he came to occupy his infernal position.

The Robot Devil’s missing origin story

The Robot Devil reference page notes that his construction date and purpose remain unknown. He may have been created before, or around, 2275, the year the Fairness in Hell Act was signed.

That law established that a robot could be rescued from Hell if one of its friends defeated the Robot Devil in a fiddling contest. The unusual rule has given fans plenty of room to speculate about the villain’s history.

Popular theories have suggested that robot soap-opera star Calculon built him, while another possibility points to Mom, the industrialist responsible for most of Earth’s robot population. Fans have debated both ideas in long-running discussions and the Futurama subreddit.

David X. Cohen’s theory

While discussing the current season, Cohen considered why anyone would manufacture a robot apparently designed to murder people. He compared the mystery with Roberto, the stabbing robot, whose original purpose is similarly difficult to explain.

Cohen pointed to the show’s history of exploring robot evolution. In his view, some machines may have escaped the limits of their programming and eventually become criminals, devils or something else entirely.

The Robot Devil may therefore have started life as an ordinary production-line robot before rejecting his programming and taking on his demonic identity.

That idea is not a definitive answer, and Cohen indicated that he had not previously been asked about the character’s origins. However, the premise appeared to interest him, leaving open the possibility that a future Futurama revival could finally reveal the truth.

A perfect mystery for fans to keep debating

The Robot Devil’s appeal comes partly from the gap between his theatrical personality and his unexplained engineering. Like a memorable arcade character with a backstory hidden behind the cabinet, he has become more recognisable than the details of his creation.

For readers planning a dedicated gaming space, RETROCADE’s arcade blog covers more gaming news, while the arcade machine buying guide can help with choosing a cabinet. A compact bartop arcade may suit a smaller room, and arcade parts are useful for repairs or custom projects.

Futurama is streaming on Hulu and Disney Plus.
