Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4 will carry forward one of the previous season’s defining features: sprites. Players will retain their existing sprite progress, while a new island and additional sprite types expand the collection system.

Sprites continue into the next season

Chapter 7 Season 3 introduced sprites as collectible creatures that provide special perks when equipped. Players find them during matches, build their collection and improve each sprite by earning experience through survival, eliminations and searching containers.

A sprite reaches its maximum level as players continue using it. To preserve the progress made during a match, players must either win or extract the sprite. The saved experience is converted into Sprite Dust, which can be spent to unlock rewards.

The system has encouraged plenty of collecting, although its return has also raised concerns about the amount of time required. Players need to watch for power hours to find the rarest sprites, and some fans say the hunt has begun to feel more like a chore than a reward. Community reaction remains divided, with concerns that collection-focused design can encourage fear of missing out in a live-service game.

At the beginning of Chapter 7 Season 4, players will be able to visit Sprite Garden, a getaway island tied to the season’s Gaming Legends theme. The location is designed as a place to meet and play with collected sprites.

Epic Games says the Season 3 sprites will be “immortalized” in Sprite Garden. That wording suggests they could remain available there even if the creatures are later removed from Battle Royale.

Five new sprites from the design contest

Five players who won the Design-A-Sprite contest will have their concepts included during the new season. Their abilities, as shown in the Epic Games communities blog post, are as follows:

  • Bullet sprite: Ammo boxes provide slightly more ammunition.
  • Dumpster Dive sprite: Jumping into dumpsters causes the sprite to gather loot.
  • Honey sprite: When a nearby enemy damages the player, a beehive appears and sends bees towards the attacker. The swarm deals light damage over time before dispersing.
  • Pond sprite: The player moves faster, jumps higher and takes less fall damage.
  • X-Ray sprite: Nearby players can be revealed through walls and other objects for a short period.

What the return means for players

Keeping collection progress should make the transition between seasons less punishing for players who have invested hours into sprite hunting. The new abilities also broaden the system beyond simple collection, offering benefits related to ammunition, movement, loot, combat and information.

For players who found the previous season’s grind exhausting, however, the expanded roster may create another lengthy checklist. Whether the system feels worthwhile will depend on how much time players want to spend chasing rare creatures instead of simply playing matches.
