Fortnite’s latest crossover brings Sonic the Hedgehog, Shadow and Dr. Eggman into the game, but Sonic’s dramatically stretched proportions have made the collaboration feel more disturbing than exciting.

The design lands in an oddly sinister place. Sonic is recognisable, yet his face looks like an approximation assembled from a half-remembered image. The Super Sonic quills appear unusually awkward, while the elongated body gives the character a distinctly unsettling silhouette. Some viewers say it just looks frightening.

Why Fortnite’s Sonic looks so strange

Part of the explanation may be practical. Fortnite crossover characters have to fit within fairly consistent height and width ranges so gameplay and hitboxes remain predictable. The game’s long history of humanoid collaborations may also be encouraging more adventurous choices, including larger and furrier characters.

Those limitations do not fully explain this particular result. Sonic’s proportions could have remained closer to his established design while still allowing a creative Fortnite interpretation. Instead, the character has been stretched into a shape that recalls the elongated redesign seen in the Sonic Boom cartoon.

The comparison is not flattering. The face, quills and unusually long body combine into a look that feels less like a bold reinvention and more like a repeat of the design discomfort surrounding the original 1.0 Sonic movie model.

A missed opportunity for Sonic and Shadow

There was room to do something interesting with Sonic and Shadow without abandoning their canon proportions. Their familiar silhouettes are strong enough to survive a stylised adaptation, and a more careful approach could have made the crossover distinctive without making the characters appear distorted.

Instead, the result invites comparisons to Sonic Boom, lanky cartoon characters and even an inflatable costume. Shadow may attract similar criticism if the same approach is applied to his in-game model.

Character design is only one part of how games translate familiar ideas into interactive spaces. RETROCADE’s arcade news and editorial coverage explores the wider arcade and gaming scene, while the arcade machine buying guide can help readers compare formats for a home setup.

For a smaller gaming space, bartop arcade cabinets offer a compact alternative, and anyone planning a custom build can browse DIY arcade kits for project inspiration.

For now, this Sonic crossover may be remembered less for the Chaos Emeralds than for one unavoidable question: why is Sonic so incredibly long?
