After the troubled reception of Football Manager 26, Sports Interactive and Sega are giving players a risk-free way to assess the next instalment. Football Manager 27 will receive a free preview on PC and Mac before its full release.
The move arrives after FM26 was criticised by many fans as buggy and awkward to use. The disappointment was amplified by the series missing a year, with that extra development time raising expectations for the eventual release.
Sega and Sports Interactive announced that Football Manager 27 will be playable at no cost from October 29 to November 3. Players can download the complete game from their preferred PC or Mac platform and begin playing without restrictions or additional steps.
The offer does not extend to console versions. RETROCADE’s arcade news and features also cover the wider world of home gaming hardware and entertainment.
What the FM27 Launch Preview includes
Sports Interactive says the temporary access period replaces the old Beta or Advanced Access label. The developer describes it as a build intended to be closer to the quality and completeness of the final launch than previous early versions.
Games started during the free period can continue into the paid Launch Preview and the full release, so players will not need to begin their careers again.
On Steam, players will also be able to continue playing after the free period ends on November 3, leading into the full launch on November 10. During the preview window, FM27 can be pre-ordered at a 10 per cent discount.
A response to Football Manager 26 criticism
The studio is directly targeting several areas that frustrated players in the previous game. Football Manager 26, which still has mostly negative reviews on Steam, was criticised for its technical problems and clumsy presentation.
For the new release, Sports Interactive promises a clearer interface, an improved match engine and additional control at both the training ground and touchline. The free preview gives dissatisfied players an opportunity to judge those changes before committing to a purchase.
If the preview encourages you to upgrade your home gaming area, RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide offers advice on choosing the right setup, while the arcade machine range covers larger cabinet options.
Key dates for Australian players
- October 29: The free Football Manager 27 preview begins on PC and Mac.
- November 3: The unrestricted free-play period ends.
- November 10: The full game launches.
The approach is an unusual but practical attempt to rebuild confidence. Fans who felt let down by FM26 can test the next game without paying upfront, while the studio has a chance to demonstrate whether its promised improvements address the series’ recent problems.
