August offers Xbox players a strong run of third-party releases, with ambitious new adventures, a refined Soulslike and two very different takes on established genres. Game Freak is making its Xbox return, while a new Star Wars strategy game and an inventive indie platformer add even more variety.

1. Beast of Reincarnation
Release date: 4 August
Game Freak, best known as the developer behind Pokémon, is stepping into a darker and more mature style of action RPG with Beast of Reincarnation. The game follows Emma, a Sealer travelling through post-apocalyptic Japan to destroy corrupted monsters.
Emma is accompanied by Koo, a wolf companion who helps her survive encounters with dangerous enemies. The combination of supernatural threats, ruined landscapes and companion-based combat gives the game a look that sits somewhere between Kena: Bridge of Spirits and a FromSoftware title.
Its biggest appeal is the chance to see whether Game Freak can build a successful new world beyond Pokémon. That makes this one of August’s most intriguing releases, regardless of whether it ultimately launches a new franchise.
2. Mortal Shell 2
Release date: 20 August
The original Mortal Shell delivered demanding boss battles and the familiar atmosphere of a Soulslike, although its ideas and world-building did not always match its influences. The sequel appears to be a more confident follow-up.
Mortal Shell 2 expands the formula with a genuine open world and redesigned combat. Early previews have been positive, with additional polish reportedly helping the sequel improve on the first game’s foundations.
If the final release delivers on that promise, it could become one of the year’s strongest Soulslikes. Players considering a dedicated upright video game cabinet may also appreciate having a demanding modern action RPG ready for longer sessions.
3. Blood Dungeon
Release date: 25 August
Blood Dungeon attracted considerable attention at Summer Game Fest in June. Created by Messhof, the developer of Wheel World, it can be summed up as Vampire Survivors reimagined as a 2D platformer.
That unusual premise is matched by deliberately lo-fi artwork, with visuals resembling rough doodles brought to life. The result has a chaotic, playful energy that gives the game an identity of its own.
A hands-on session at Summer Game Fest proved difficult to put down, making Blood Dungeon one of the month’s most compelling indie prospects. Its compact, instantly readable style could also suit a compact bartop arcade.
4. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy
Release date: 27 August
Asobo Studio follows the acclaimed A Plague Tale: Requiem with Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, a prequel that takes the series in a more action-focused direction. Requiem earned a Game of the Year nomination at The Game Awards in 2022, establishing a high bar for the studio’s storytelling and cinematic presentation.
This time, players control Sophia, a new character whose journey leads to Minotaur’s Island. The game promises faster and more aggressive combat than its stealth-oriented predecessors, while retaining Asobo Studio’s focus on emotional storytelling and high production values.
The change in structure makes this more than a straightforward continuation. It is a chance for the series to explore a new protagonist and a more forceful style of play without abandoning its narrative strengths.
5. Star Wars: Zero Company
Release date: 27 August
Star Wars: Zero Company brings turn-based tactics to the Clone Wars era, placing a squad of misfit mercenaries at the centre of its story. The concept has been widely compared with XCOM, but the project has a particularly direct connection to that influential strategy series.
Bit Reactor, the developer, was founded by former Firaxis Games staff who worked on XCOM. That background makes the tactical design especially interesting, while the Star Wars setting provides a familiar universe for a new cast and campaign.
The Clone Wars period is well suited to stories about unconventional teams, and a band of mercenaries offers plenty of room for character-driven missions. For fans of strategy games and the franchise’s less conventional heroes, this could be August’s major release.
A busy August for Xbox players
