A new game from Studio BitDot turns the familiar idea of finding a needle in a haystack into an astonishingly literal challenge: search through 5,000,000 pieces of hay to locate a single needle.

Nas Nakarus, CEO of Nano Neighbors developer Studio BitDot, shared footage of the unnamed project on Twitter. The clip shows the player removing hay one piece at a time and throwing each piece aside, gradually clearing the golden pile in search of the tiny piece of sharp metal hidden within it.

That simple premise could appeal to players who enjoy quiet, repetitive tasks, while sounding deeply frustrating to anyone who wants a faster route to a result. It is an unusually extreme example of the kind of small, methodical activity sometimes used as a relaxing outlet in games.

i made a game where you literally have to find a needle in a haystack

the catch is there are 5,000,000 pieces of hay and only 1 needle pic.twitter.com/q2TehY53iJ

A deliberately enormous task

The game is not available yet, although Nakarus has indicated that a Steam page should arrive soon. He has also suggested that multiplayer may be part of the project, allowing several players to search the haystack together—or persuade friends to share the digital busywork.

Nakarus describes the concept as “the absolute limit” for people who use mundane video-game activities as a meditative experience. Players will also have access to tools that could simplify the search or introduce more chaos, depending on how they are used.

That balance may determine whether the five-million-piece haystack feels serene or stressful. The project’s initial post had passed 48 million views at the time of writing, but its eventual audience will be clearer once people can actually attempt the search.

Yep that’s the idea 😅

Could this work in an arcade?

The concept is a reminder that arcade games do not always need elaborate rules. A focused task, clear feedback and an absurdly committed objective can be enough to make a game instantly understandable. For more arcade news and unusual gaming ideas, visit the RETROCADE Arcade Blog.

It also raises practical questions about controls and screen space. A physical cabinet would need to make repeated searching comfortable, while a compact setup could suit a deliberately intimate experience. Players comparing formats can explore the arcade machine buying guide, browse arcade machines, or consider bartop arcades for smaller rooms.
