Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave can technically be completed after following only one route — or by ignoring the Flame Lords altogether. For the best chance against Balor in the final campaign, however, completing at least two routes is the smarter approach.

Your second playthrough is quicker and less demanding because it carries important progress forward. It also creates more chances to recruit characters, build their stats and prepare a stronger force for Act 3.

Should you play a second route in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave?

Yes. Starting another route after finishing your first makes the campaign noticeably more manageable, particularly when money, renown and preparation time are in short supply.

Every chapter gives you a limited number of quests, so deciding how to divide your time between exploration, equipment, gifts and recruitment matters. Some characters have subquests that provide additional gold or renown, but the number of possible early recruits is still restricted. Most of the remaining characters require a renown level of seven or higher.

Act 2 increases the number of units you can deploy in a mission to 15. If your roster is too small, the game supplies guest units, but you cannot choose their equipment or class. The battles can be survived with fewer soldiers, yet having 12 to 15 controllable characters makes the pressure from the large enemy groups much easier to handle.

What carries over to a new route?

Once a route is complete, your map progress appears when you begin another one. Areas do not need to be explored again, and you can immediately see which towns sell particular weapons.

At the beginning of each chapter, subquests already completed during the previous route are cleared automatically. Their rewards — including gold, renown and other items — are paid out together. Leda is the exception: for plot reasons, she must repeat the “Monster in the Night” quest.

This creates a reliable stream of several thousand gold and a few hundred renown per chapter, before counting the new subquests available on the second route. That extra income makes recruitment and preparation considerably less restrictive.

The identity of your second protagonist is not especially important, although Cai has a useful advantage. His “kindness” quests appear in each chapter alongside his regular subquests and provide additional gold and renown, making him a strong choice if you want an easier recruitment process.

Why early recruitment matters

With more resources available on later routes, you can recruit characters sooner and give them more time to develop. Earlier recruitment also appears to improve the chance of ending up with higher stats.

Ultand provides a clear example. After joining near the end of Dietrich’s route, she struggled to match Dante, who had been recruited several chapters earlier. Ultand joins Cai automatically, and that version had higher stats across the board by the time the route was complete, despite being the same level.

The game also combines the versions of a character recruited across different routes. The Ultand appearing in Act 3 was formed from the Ultands recruited on both Dietrich’s and Cai’s campaigns. Their stats are merged, meaning every recruited and trained version contributes to the character’s strongest final form.

That system becomes especially valuable in Act 3, which is much larger in scope and filled with intense battles. Building the roster across multiple routes gives you more trained characters and a better chance of surviving the final stretch.

A practical route plan

  • Complete your first route before starting the final campaign against Balor.
  • Begin a second route to retain map progress and receive previous chapter rewards.
  • Consider Cai for the second route if additional gold and renown are a priority.
  • Recruit characters as early as possible so they have more time to train.
  • Use multiple versions of the same character to improve their eventual combined form.
