Fabio’s confession changes Dietrich’s final battle

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave features more than 60 playable characters, but one of its most striking scenes arrives during the final chapter of Dietrich’s Part One route. The battle-hungry warrior is pushed to the edge when his closest ally, the eccentric scholar Fabio, makes an emotional appeal.

Jimmie Yamaguchi, the actor behind Fabio, recalled the scene in an interview. He had not yet played the finished game and had struggled to find a collector’s edition, which he said had become difficult to obtain. Despite that, the recording session left a strong impression.

A duel with the god of war

Before the climactic fight, Dietrich is due to face Theodora, the queen of Saramis, in the final round of the Heroic Games. Political unrest at home forces Theodora to withdraw, handing Dietrich a victory he does not want. Winning without a fight offers little satisfaction to someone who lives for combat.

When the Divine Sovereign asks what reward he would like, Dietrich requests a death match against Mars, the god of war. Mars accepts after taking interest in Dietrich’s ability during an earlier confrontation.

Dietrich and his allies defeat Mars, but the battle is not over. The god enters a second phase and takes the form of a dragon. Dietrich must confront him alone while the rest of the party deals with incoming enemies. Attempting to attack Mars with another character causes additional waves of foes to appear.

“You are human, and I love you”

Even after Dietrich defeats Mars in dragon form, the god refuses to fall. Dietrich then begins drawing on the demonic power inside his sword, Answerer. Dark energy coils around him as he risks losing his humanity and becoming a beast.

Fabio responds with a desperate reminder of who Dietrich is. “Stop this now and come back to us!” he pleads. “You are human, and I love you.”

The confession has roots in the pair’s wider relationship. Fabio’s interest in Dietrich has always reached beyond academic curiosity, both in the main story and in optional support conversations. At their first meeting, Fabio calls him a “beautiful stranger”, while his arguments with Esmeralda often centre on who Dietrich truly favours.

The game treats Fabio’s feelings seriously rather than using them as a joke. Dietrich appears to return that affection, including through dialogue in their gaming news and feature coverage. Fabio’s declaration ultimately helps bring Dietrich back from the brink.

Recording a scene without preparation

Yamaguchi said the emotional impact was heightened by the way game voice sessions are recorded. Actors are not given the full script in advance, meaning they may see a scene for the first time moments before performing it. In a large production such as this, a performance may be recorded in only one, two or three takes.

For Fabio’s speech, Yamaguchi drew on emotions he had experienced but might not have expressed because of social expectations. His approach was to let those feelings surface through the character rather than trying to over-plan the delivery.

That process helped him capture Fabio’s fear, longing and desperation as Dietrich’s humanity slipped away. Yamaguchi described the moment as the first time Fabio had encountered an emotion with such meaning, and possibly his first real love.

The scene also marks a major change for Fabio. His harsh view of “surface dwellers” reflects the Agarthans’ belief that they are lesser beings, yet his time with Dietrich and Esmeralda steadily challenges that prejudice. Beneath the pompous, cutting scholar is someone capable of genuine tenderness.

A standout relationship in Fortune’s Weave

Dietrich and Fabio’s connection gives the route an emotional counterpoint to its large-scale battles. The final confrontation with Mars is not only a test of strength: it becomes the moment when Fabio’s curiosity, affection and personal growth all come together.

For players exploring the game’s character stories, the relationship is a reminder that powerful drama can emerge from the conversations between battles.
