Spoilers for Parts 2 and 3 of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave keeps Eshmel’s true identity deliberately unclear. Like Byleth in Three Houses, the protagonist says very little, carries another soul within their body and becomes central to the fate of an entire empire. The game never directly explains who Eshmel was before becoming the Herald of the Pale Raven, but a compelling fan theory links them to Solel.
How Eshmel comes into existence
At the beginning of the game, Fortuna and the leader of Kunlun village use ancient space technology to create Eshmel. The result is a Mediator: an apparently perfect being intended to guide and protect the villagers.
The game leaves the origin of Mediator souls uncertain. It is not clear where they come from, or whether they possess souls in the usual sense. Fortuna selects one soul from the aether for Eshmel, saying it is suited to making amends and restoring light to Dagda. That line seems vague at first, but the story repeatedly introduces characters carrying the burden of past failures.
The theory that Eshmel is Solel reborn
The strongest version of the theory, discussed by fans on Reddit and GameFAQs, identifies Eshmel’s previous life as Solel. Players who follow Cai’s route or complete Anna’s paralogue may notice several clues supporting the idea.
Anna’s paralogue places her alongside Solel, a Trident who rides an elephant. Trident appears to be a divine class associated with Solel’s family. Aurora, Solel’s daughter, is the only other god in Dagda’s pantheon identified as a Trident, while Eshmel is the only other character who begins life as one.

There is also a visual comparison. Solel’s battle stance closely resembles Eshmel’s. This is not conclusive, since Fortune’s Weave reuses animations and poses across many classes, and Solel’s movements differ considerably from Aurora’s. It is an intriguing detail rather than proof.
A more substantial clue is Eshmel’s spear. Once the bandages are removed and the weapon is restored, it matches Solel’s spear. During Part 3, Credna can remove the bandages and comments on how familiar the weapon appears.
Why Solel would need redemption
The game’s lore provides another reason the theory fits. Fortuna explains that Nabatean souls do not return to the ordinary cycle of death and rebirth. Instead, they are drawn back to Sothis. Three Houses establishes that Sothis and her children can place old souls into unexpected bodies.
Solel’s possible need for redemption also echoes the stories of the Flame Lords. Cai’s route explores his failures within his family, Dietrich’s route examines his failures as a leader of his nation, Theodora’s route focuses on his broader ethical shortcomings and Leda’s route questions his ability to rule justly.

The theory also casts Solel’s behaviour in a harsher light. He does not act when his father murders 100,000 people, responding only after his wife becomes a target. He repeatedly protects the status quo and allows the Order of Mithras to expand, despite its questionable origins and contribution to Dagda’s mental decline.
That interpretation could explain Anna’s paralogue. Anna cannot be recruited, and the sequence ends with Solel finally recognising that the Order of Mithras cannot be trusted. By then, however, its influence is far deeper than he realised. With disaster approaching, Solel is unable to reverse the consequences of his neglect.

A mystery that may be better left open
If Eshmel truly is Solel reborn, the story’s opening idea about making amends becomes much more significant. Eshmel would not simply be a newly created guide for Dagda, but a former ruler forced to confront the damage caused by his earlier choices.
An expansion could eventually confirm that Eshmel and Solel are the same person. For now, the game leaves the answer unresolved. That ambiguity may be intentional: the unanswered question gives players room to interpret Eshmel’s identity rather than reducing the character to a single explanation.
Until the developers provide a definitive answer, the evidence remains circumstantial. The shared Trident connection, the matching spear, the soul lore and Solel’s arc across the routes nevertheless make the rebirth theory difficult to dismiss.
