Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the third and final instalment in Square Enix’s remake trilogy, will launch on 8 April 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X.

Director Naoki Hamaguchi announced the date during a State of Play presentation, which also included a new trailer and more than 10 minutes of gameplay. The footage highlighted several additions to the remake project, including the outfit-based FITS ability system.

New systems and an open-world adventure

FITS connects character abilities to outfits, recalling the way traditional jobs are linked to costumes in Final Fantasy X-2 and Lightning Returns. The Highwind airship will serve as the party’s mobile headquarters, and players can customise it during the adventure.

The game will also include a fast-forward option for cutscenes. Square Enix says the feature is designed to let players progress at their own pace, although viewing a scene at double speed can make its dialogue and action difficult to follow.

Exploration will allow players to change the active party member while travelling through the open world. The chosen leader can affect how quests unfold, with some environmental interactions and smaller story moments changing accordingly. Individual characters will also receive their own questlines.

Queen’s Blood fans will have a new storyline to follow, centred on Red XIII and the card game.

Returning characters and familiar locations

Revelation was first unveiled at Summer Game Fest earlier in 2026. The announcement introduced the title alongside a short look at its characters and gameplay systems.

The complete party will feature in the concluding chapter, including Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind. Players will be able to pilot the Highwind across the open world, which combines new destinations with returning areas from Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

Hamaguchi has said the finale will avoid the same degree of content bloat associated with the second game. A trailer shown during Gamescom Opening Night Live also revealed the Weapons, powerful superbosses intended to provide some of the toughest battles in the game.

Will the remake change the original story?

The development team is not altering its direction in response to player feedback. Hamaguchi has stated that the team established a clear plan for the trilogy from the outset and continues to follow it.

What that plan means for the ending remains uncertain. The first two games have reworked events from the 1997 original, leaving open the possibility that Cloud and the rest of the group could change the fates established in the original story.
